Chuck Fowler (400 Yam) led the race at the bomb b ut a few miles later had the misfo rt une to snag a gas cap vent an d th e engine ground to a halt. j amie Avels (400 Yam) took the lead at that point. Padilla lost his chain in the same area and .h ad to remount it before carrying on. Tom Kelly (250 KTM} and Mark Zoller (250 Yam) had gone to the outside of the starting area to break free of the heavy dust. They went a little to o far and had began to turn back when they started racing together. Along the way they hit a road crossing and glared at each other in the midst of m an y gymnastics. By the end o f th-e 22-mile loop, Kelly was in second behind Avels and pursued by Zo ller and Padilla. Rich Mark rode out onto the second loop in fourth. At about the halfway point, he was catching the leaders. First to be passed was Wayne Garrett, Kelly's partner. Then Zoller, who was riding two loops, At about the three-quarter point, Mark passed Rick Shirey, who was teaming with Avels , The top fo ur arrived in the pits practically in each other's laps . On the third loop, Avels moved up on Padilla to battle with him up a gnarly sandwash until his ch ain snapped. Kelly to ok over for his te am an d passed Zo ller's partner jim Beardsley. Tom Schell and partner Phil Stumbo (250 Suz/CZ) had moved fro m seventh to fourth , about a minute behind Beardsley. The fourth and fifth loops brought little change except flK the Kelly /Garrett KTM breaking the pipe's sti nge r. Kelly too k over for the last two loo p s since he was m u ch lighter than Garrett, wh o u sually rides an Open class machine. Despite the lost power, Kelly mo ved up on the last loop to challenge Mark. n Rich held him off and fi ishe d with a slim lead. After Kelly came Beardsley, Stumbo and the team o f Chris Kallen and Allen Meek (40 0 Yam). Kallen had crashed righ t off th e st ar t an d compl eted the lo op ru nning 20th. Mee k continued m oving up, getting sec ond Open Expert honors. At sixth was an other 25 0 team, Monte Lee and Mike j ohnston (Yam/KTM) . Th ey were followed by th e first Amateur team, Tony Harris an d Steve Clugston (400 Yam) . ' Roger Miller an d Bruce J o sephs (250 Ya m/Oss) were the over all Novic e winners, though race watchers might remember Miller m o re for taking ou t the banner m arking a turn through the p its. Rus s Taylor an d Bre tt Hensen (4 00 Yam) grabbed sec ond overall Novice and first Open . Terry Fransen and Dan Daniels (25 Yam) picked up the Begin ner lead the second loop an d held it to th fin ish , beating Mike Martin and Pet Vetrano (250 Bul/Yam) . for t h instant-transfer-to-Novice honors. The results listed are somewha sketchy an d highl y unofficial. Al Beginners and _ many Novices wer lapped at least once, leading to scorin confusion.
