'15. 20 Sexton Scores Binkley graduates By Andi Gangewer' ELSINORE, CAL.,jUNE 5 A full class of Open Experts were on hand to race with Professional Junior Rod Sexton (360 Yam ) who came out on top. Sext on got a good start and soon had a very comfortable lead over Ed Steffen and David Reinhardt. While Rod was running away with the race, Reinhardt and Steffen were handlebar to handlebar, the white flag was - waving, and Steffen either had to get by Reinhardt or play third fiddle. David left a hole.open and Ed stuffed his big 500 Yamaha under David 's 360 at the checkered and stole second. The second moto Steffen got on the throttle and roared in to the lead. Sexton was right on Ed's back wheel and he left just enough room for Rod to ' slip by. Reinhardt sat in third. Larry Hedstrom, on another 500 Yamaha, was the next man off the starting line ' after the rubber band mapped. Sexton was in hot pursuit. orr the jump they roared, with Hedstrom in the lead, but Larry went wide on the sweeper and again Rod stepped in to take over. Rod picked up the gold as David Reinhardt tallied second overall. Ten special Amteurs filled up two heat races, one semi and a main. The S 8< S Yamaha of Flip Binkley led the first heat as he reserved:" seat for himself in the main. Heat two was a tigh t squeeze for 250 Yamaha mounted Scott Polson and lloyd Patzke 'g ot his momen t of glory in the semi. Patzke led the whole race an d ushered Dorothy Rowe, Steve Karstan, Bobbi Hunter and Chris Choisser on to the main. As the main event fmal ly rolled around, five winners came to the line. It was Flip Binkley's night and he plucked off a win with flying colors. Binkley 's buddy Choisser was the seco nd place finisher. Riders played follow the leader with the only change This must be the start 'cause o nce the in posrnon on lap one when Dorothy Rowe slipped past Bobbi Hunter for fourth, Scott Polson was third. Let's hear it for the Hackers at Viewfinders GP By Norm Monohan CARLSBAD, CAL.,jUNE 6 Eighteen Sidehacks lined up on the start ing grid, including three from Arizona, one from Fresno riding a propane-powered 450 Ducati, and two from Santa Barbara. The Viewfinders had ' promised " no water " for this year 's Grand Prix - too bad. Starting on the pavement provided plenty of racing for position before hitting the dirt and, although the sidehack event is one of the smallest classes, it provides the largest dust cloud ! The first three bikes out front had gained a tremendous lead by the end of the first lap . .Dust wasn't the only problem - after a day and a half of racing the course was constant whoop-de-docs and/or rocks and ruts. The Melillo brothers Jed the first tw 0 laps until a Sl timing belt broke, costing them the race. Ralph Whitney/R~ jones, close behind the leaders, were quick to take over the front spot until minor mechanical problem s slowed their rapid pace. Palfreyman/Gardner then assumed the lead to th e checkered. • Back in the pack, the Peck brothers swapped ends on the co urse, causing a head-on collision with Polito/jackson. Ron jackson, fro m Phoenix, said a tree jumped out and p ulled himoff his bike . The road rash (tree rash) on his back was good evidence. Several bikes were decorated with ribbons, evidence of over-shooting the turns in the dust. The Sanner brothers were plagued with a stuck throttle which resul ted in their inspecting the local vegetation quite closel y! The team o f Crandell /Splatt
