Nicol attempted to pull off the upset at several different ti mes during the race, but young Doug had to settle for the number two spot with Van Hook p lacing thi rd. Newly-transferred 250 .Pro Pete Smith was an other rider to pull o ff an upset. The Maico- mounted rider claimed an overall class win over Van Hoo k and Gary Bart le tt. Smith took th e victory in the ope ning moto and co nsistently placed second in the n ex t two rounds to p ic k up his first win ever as a Pro . Van Hook captured the second motos after crashing in th e first five-lapper. For , the third co nsecutive week, Val Tamietti rod e his Track ' n Travel Maico to vic tory in the 500 Pro class ove r Bob Elliott and hard-ch arging Kevin Yo u ng. The "Vulture" flies in Arizona By Terry Ward WICKENBURG, AR IZ., MAY 30 It was early morning as the second annual 100 Mile Vulture Desert Race got under way at The Vulture Mine site about 15 miles west of Wickenburg. With engines off, riders sat on their bikes waiting for the flag to drop . Each class was started at three minute intervals with the Experts leadin g the field. The course started on an old dirt air strip and took the riders over five 20-mile loops consisting of rocks, bumps and 12 miles of unbelieveably deep sand washes. Despite these obstacles 175 out of the original 265 starters finished the race, the largest number of finishers for any ADRA event to date. Tom "Bones" Holmberg (Hus) was in third at the first check and went on to win the event overall. Tom took home $100 for his second "Vulture" win in as many years. Dave Miller (Hus) was second with John Imbriale, passin g up a day at the local MX track, bringing in third. D arryll Tussing, m ounted on a Honda Ho use Honda, was first 250 Expert and fou rth overall, Dan iel Dibb (Hus) was second. Jim Harsha, from Dirt Riders West, was firs t in the 175 class on another Husky. T here were no 125 Expert fini shers. . The battle for firs t n on-Ex pe rt was be tween Bob Shepard (250 Hus) and Gro ver Ward (360 Hus ], but Bob overcame several cras hes to fin ally take the win. Ward held on for seco nd overall, first Ope n Ama te ur, with Tom Clark second ' Open Amateur, third overall. Gary Ewing put in a good ride,for the 125 Amateur win. In the n ew (Young Oldie) class Jarrol Jamison (Hus) captured the win while Tom Maxwell ran a good race, fmishing first in the Over Forty class. Jon Crain (Yam) wo n the sp onsors' trophy for Southwest Yamaha as he charged to an Open Novice win . Tom Cleveland (Yam) was second, but first 125 rider.
