E AME: No chance to get it wired By Ted Titmas VALENCIA, CAL.,JUNE 13 AME reconstructed the Shadow Glen MX course in accordance with their new policy to redesign the ' track every weekend. Riders are very much in favor of the idea and most found the layout much to their liking. Donny Hansen, aboard his California Motosport Maico, was back in the 250 Pro battle once again. Hansen was followed by Hal Strauss (Mai) who was odds on favorite this Sunday. In their race long battle for the lead, the two managed to capture the attention of spectators as Hansen came out on top with Strauss only a few yards away. Mike Shoemaker (Mai) and Ron Gibson (Kaw) finished a distant third .and fourth. In the second moro Strauss had it a bit easier due to the absence of Hansen, who didn't start, and cruised to an easy win. Overall results gave Strauss the big win, Shoemaker second and Gibson, who did a fine job, was in for third. Today's biggest upset came from Tim Scully (Oss), who has recently moved up from the Intermediate ranks, finishing second in the second 250 Pro mota, whipping seasoned Pros Mike Shoemaker and Ron Gibson. Overall .results of the 500 Pro class looked like a Maico parade with Cole Bros. coming out on top. Donny Hansen's bad luck spilled over from the 250 Pros and dropped him out of competition in the 500 race. Hansen, after winning the first mota, was unable to start in the second. Andy J annings (Mai) went on to win the second, taking the first spot overall. Dave Hensche (Mai) and Clint Smith ' (Mai) finished second and third. • Results in Results Section. , , (Top) Hi there - you wanna buy a duck? Nope? How 'bout a slightly used hack? For the 'wo m en and kids. it was the end of the trail. with an easy four mile ride up Pipeline Road to Charley's. For the rest it was a 23.6 mile loop to the finish, all at 24 mp h. Whoooeee was it fast! CRC really laid out an excellent third loop. Nothing too terribly hard (the C riders had a little trouble on some of the sand hills) but the course hardly ever went 25 yards before turning. Even the best riders had trouble main taining the average. If there we re slow riders in front, it was just about impossible to zero the checks. Three riders managed though with Honda MR·250 mounted Larry Keast losing just five seconds at the tiebreaker to win the Gringo Enduro. B riders. Bill Fletcher and John Lernbi, gave Harry a run for the money though. They also zeroed but couldn't match Harry's tiebreaker. Bill and John will probably. be "A" riders their next time out, according to CRC's referee Jerry McNeal. Most riders agreed this ' • was CRC's best enduro of the year. Res ul ts pending. A free ticket to the Grand Prix went to each non-Pro winner. Val Tamietti, a local Maico hotshoe, took a Honda to the 125 Pro overall. Val was tied in pain ts with Ron Blanton (Yam) but ended with a better second mota finish, Jon Derhammer breezed his Wheelsmith Man tesa to an easy 250 Pro win while Mike Gilman rode his new Suzuki mount to an uncontested Open Pro overall. The Wheelsmith himself. Greg Smith. blasted in to the first turn of the Open race with a great holesh o t with Mike Gilman. Steve Montaque (Yam). and Chuck "Feets" Minert in hot pursuit. Soon after. Smith's clutch went sour and Minert . started to fade. Gilman pulled into a fine lead and eventually lapped more than half the pack by the end of the forty minute mota. Montaque settled into second, while Randy Blevins pulled his Bike Shop CZ Another Smith hits Pro ranks for a win By Tom Blattler IRWINDALE, CAL.,JUNE 11 A veteran, an experienced 125 Pro, and a rookie battled it out for the top 125 Professional spot last week at Irwindale in the second of four "White Knuc kler Series" CMC events. The veteran , Dave Pessy, \he winningest CMC Professional in histo~ attempted to hold off the challenges of' the experienced, Vince "The Hooker" Van Hook; and first-time Pro Doug Nicol.
