KIOO Presents The International Race of the Century! All went well until I 1/2 miles from the flag . Th en th e rear chai n came o ff, and Hobson , tr y in g h isbest to sh a ke o ff Grc asley , sp ed o n to win at a re cord ra ce aver age and se t a re cord lap for th at final ci rcui t at 99 .96 mph ! Friday th e weather ch anged for the worst , and finally , at 3 o'clock in th e afte rn oo n it was decided to postpon e racing till the following d ay . But th e weather fo recas t was not good . Fortunately on ce again the experts were wrong, though, and with a patchy co u rse d rying out with a strong breeze, the four lap 250cc race began . It was a start to finish success for T om Herron. He led Ch arli e Williams by just two seconds at the end of the first lap , but Charlei was forced out with split petrol tank, leaving Takazumi Katayama in second spot. Katayama, improving eve ry lap, closed the gap to just 25 seconds at the end 01 the race, but Tom alw ays h ad things under co n troJ. Third was Chas Mortimer . team m at e to th e Japanese rider in th e Sarome e qu ipe, While Tony Rutter grabbed fourth position . It was a n interesting race , although spoiled for many by the news that Les Kenny had be en kill ed on the opening lap . The expected clash between Mick Grant and John Williams in this race was short-lived. Mick 's Kaw asaki stopped at Ball acr ain e on the first lap , and at the end o f th at circuit he retired with clutch trouble. Williams then had an easy time of it. Alex George was always in second spot on th e Herm atite Yamah a, but lap b y lap the gap stre tc hed . Not the most exciting ra ce of the year, and for man y spe c tators and competitors , the rush to Mallory Park for the Post TT In ternational the foll owing d ay was a more eventful ra ce !
