riders lungs burning a little lean 5,000 motocross fans
ascended to a scenic valley over 7,000 feet above their
Southern California homes. When it was all over Mike
Bell and his four-stroke Honda hadthrobbed its way up
the side of a mountain. down through a moist sand
valley. across a wooded glen ' and into the Open class
winner's circle. Joining him there with strong .
performances against strong fields were 125 winner Jack
Keese and 250 Pro Gary Ogden.
Yet on the side of the mountain everyone came away
a winner from the hundreds of Amateurs who came to
race on the best prepared and roughest track in
California to the spectators who got more than 20 motos
a day of rooster-tailing action. Mammoth is Marty Tripes
coming from behind, Bob Grossi coming out to ride
again. Kenny Zahrt flashing down the downhill. Danny
LaPorte being knocked down in the first turn and still
qualifying. but -rno re than that Mammoth is motocross
madness at its finest,
