CHICO , CA L., M AY 15 Although it is still earl y in the season , t he co mpe tit ion at Cycl eland Speed way has already begun to toughen up. A good examp le is the 80cc Mini Handicap race . Off the line it was Bri an Ro berts, Richi e Hiatt , Bob by Tho m as , Mich ael Cagle and Jeff Valentin e, wh o rides a 20·yd. handicap . By the second lap, Thomas had taken ove r the lead foll owed b y , Roberts, Valen t ine, Ca gle an d Hi att. Valentine , pushing hard, d idn 't ge t b y Roberts un til the sixth lap; th en in th e seven th lap he took over the lead from Thomas . Thomas battled to t ake th e ' Iead back from Valentine on ly to finish in ches behind him . A restart was required in th e spe cial Ex per t point ra ce when Steve Dietz (Bul) fell going in to the second tum. . Jim Hubbard (Yam) lost out while , trying not to hit Dietz . A second restart was required when Dietz, Dick Turner (Yam) and Shane Scott ( Ya m ) went down before the first tum , When the ra ce fin ally got under way it was Del Silva (Yam ), Ken Gray (Bul), Turner Dietz, Hubbard and Cliff Hylton (Yam) . Everything went fine til the fourth lap when Hylton fell and Turner followed suit in the sixth lap. At the fin ish lin e it . was Silva, Gray , Hubbard and Dietz. • North smokes at Spillway SANTA MARIA , CAL. , MAY 23 Jerry Shore brought some of his best southern motocrossers north for the Fourth Annual North vs. South A.M.E. Motocross Challenge , an dTf you listened to Jerry , the North was in big trouble 1 But - it didn 't w ork out quite that way as the South got smoked ! ~ The first 125 Pro class showed so m e fine riding by Jack Keese sponsored by Sambas . lIe took over first place on the third lap from fellow North rider Mark Gambetta (FM F) and kept Gambetta and th ird pla ce speedster Bobby Jones far enough behind for the win . In the second 12 5 mota, Gambetta reversed things and w as never head ed by Keese o r Bobby Jones. Magoo Chandl er lo oked like a favorit e fr om the start but ended up in th e ch ainlin k fence to finish his bid for .the da y. Mota three fo un d Gambetta with a lunched rod sho rtly a fter the mota st arted wh ich let Jack Kee se take the ove rall fo llo wed by Bobby Jones in second. Willy · Sim on third and T ony Wanket fourth . The 250 Pro class w as the lar gest and the ac tion just as fierce with Pat Richter on a super quick KTM from Pacifi c Performance t aking moto o ne away from U, S. Su zuki 's Bob Elli ott followed by another No rt h rid er Sc ott Karl on a Mai co and Tom Rapp fr om Dirt Factory takin g fourth on one of the ne w KTM m achines. Mota two sa w Bob Ellio tt getting a great start and cat ching Sherman Schne ller (the lo cal holeshot artis t ) to le ad for the entire 20 minutes; followed closely by Pat Ri chter o f the North and Rick L ong also from the North. The third mota (250 ) agai n saw Elliott the leader with a quick and co nsiste n t Pat Ri chter right on him the whole time and Scott Karl in third. A steady T om Rapp finished fourth, but enough to put him in the m oney since Karl had been down o ne lap in the second mota. Overall, Elliott did his thing for th e South followed by Ri chter, Long and Rapp for the four money envelopes. The Open Pro class looked like Magoo Chandler's day as he manhandled the bi g KTM like a 125. But a protest
