Ro b Za mora an d Gregg Yo ung rounded off the top five . • Qgden doubles Saddleback By Patti Trotter ORANGE, CAL.,JUNE 6 , It's said by so me th at th e full moon brings out the weirdos, well that must hold equally true for the sun and motocrossers. Today was hot, dry and dusty and the air wa s full of the buzz from 125s and the roar of the big boys. 125 FMF rider Dave Carlson was first off the line and really dialing it on when Mike Bell aboard his super trick Franks Honda flew past him. For awhile it looked as if Mike might take the chec kered flag but then he threw his chain while co m ing out of the cany on an d was passed by half the pack of 23 riders. With ' Mike out of contention Carls on and Broc Glover (DG ) were left to do b at tle for th e first place points. Carlson and Glover were co ming up the last hill for the flag when Broc squeaked past Car lson and was credited for th e ~n. . The second moto saw Jeff Jennin gs (Su z) get on the gas and stay at the front of the pack for the entire mo to . Jeff's co mpe tition came from Mike Bell ( Fra) and Dave Carlson ( n l F). The money for the day went to Carl son, Jennings and Alan Smith (FM F). . Thirty-five rid ers were on the Ime for the 25 0 Pro moto and wh en t he gate dropped it was Jeff Jennings (Suz) , J ohn Smith (Suz) and Gary Ogden (Suz) co m ing down the hill first. Tho se three riders dominated the moto with the only ch ange co m ing when Ogden go t past Smith for a switch in the second/third spots. Montesa rider Jon DerHammer got the holeshot in moto two and kept his machine wide open only to be passed by the Bassett flash , Gary Ogden . The second moto of the 250s looked a little like crash and burn unlimited. Taking the money home were Gary Ogden , Jeff Jennings and Jon DerHammer. Gary Ogden h ad such a good lead in the 500 Pro class that when he go t off in front of the scoring tower he was able to remount his RJl,I 370 and still cro ss the line for the win in the first moto. Mot o two h ad Gary and Marty Moates (Suz ) blasting around the track passing and re-p assing each other until Ga ry • finally got the win. Results in Results Section. Rainey-Allison collect at Corona By Elaine Jon es CORONA, CAL. , MA Y 26 Wayne Rainey and John went home with a little money for their efforts short track' and half-mile 22 Allison pocket in the money races. Wayne co pp ed the short track after taking over the lead from Mike Tidwell and put some daylight between him and the rest of the ' field. Eddie Laws on mo ved in to se cond and was hot on his heels as Mike held off John Allison for third . Wayne added a win in the 250 Expert short track to his tall y of superb performances. In the 250 Expert half-mile Wayne had to settle for second to Tidwell with Dylan in third. The half-mile money race wa s never in doubt for John Allison as he led the 15 lapper from start to finish. Eddie Lawson moved by Tidwell and Rainey to settle into a solid second with a real battle going on for third between Mik e and Wayne_ Mike got a break when Wayne 's tire went completely flat on the last lap, but he still managed to hang on to fourth. Mike Tidwell shared the 125 Exp er t honors with his bi ggest ch alle nger . Darmy Perkins. Mike took the short track from Danny , and Danny returned the gesture by topping him on the half-mile. Dylan Neihart rounded out the field in both finishing third. Terry McCreery recovered nicely from a hard fall last week won both the 125. short track and half-mile Amateur goes. Cliff Whetstone was the only other rider to hit for two as he won the 250 Amateur short track and half-mile. Mike Laney captured the . Open Expert half-mile with a lead big enough for him to stop and have coffee, Dick ' Lewis, owner of Kawasaki of Pomona, said his bike wasn't rurming but he sure fooled a lot of people by winning .th e Open Amateur short track from John Lundgren and Fred Conover. On the half-mile he got off on top but Don Driggs went charging by and never missed a beat on his way to the gold. Eddie San Roman flat blew the fenders off the 250 Twins as he co n t inued to rule the class and improves with each passing wee k. Mark Colier and David DeTemple, one and two in the 250 Novice half-mile, proved that you have to finish as well as go fast as they were the only ones out of a seven bike field to make the checkered flag . • Bad luck took hold of Simons in the second moto and Jones went on to win. With Jones and Simons each dropping a moto, Gary Denton (Hon), with two • thirds, ended up with the win. • Results in Results Section. Harper hustles to CRC$l000 MXwin Carlson confounds CMC night MX hopefuls . By H. Richard By To m Brattier VALENCIA; CAL, MAY 16 The California Racing Club offered a I ,000 purse and Will Harper (Mai) was right there to accep t with overall wins in both the 250 and 500 Pro classes. s John Hateley (Mai) got off to an early lead in the 500 Pro class, but a strong ride by Harper found him eventually leading both motos to take home the victory . Hateley came up with the second place honors for the day . Harper (Mai) again took the lead in both 250 Pro rnotos and held on to it for the overall win, despite strong efforts from Bob Elliott (Suz) and Mike Runyard (C-A). . The 125 Expert class had its up and downs. In the first moto Bobby Jones (Hon) 'an d Willie Simons (Hon) put on a spectacular show but Jones had to leave due to bike problems. That left the field wide open for Simons to take the win . IRWINDALE, CAL., MAY 28 Davey Carlson, aboard an FMF Honda, held off the pack of hard-charging 125 Pro riders to / cap ture the overall class honors. J A David Taylor. who was riding a D & G Suzuki, came up with bike trouble on ' I the very first lap of the first moto which put him out of contention for the rest "" of the evening. Carlson and Gary Den ton battled for the lead during the first three laps, but as they moved 1 towards the big berm, Denton slid out , and hit Carlson, who we nt over the ) berm and towards the fence. As both riders scrambled back into the race, the ' third and fifth place riders collided next to the berm. Final1y, when the dust had cleared, Carlson went on to take the win with Eddie Clark second, fol1owed by Denton and Andy Baines. The second moto was a little more peaceful with Denton taking the r,
