Although deLespinary did not win the 125 GP race, he led it until the wa ter pump impeller on his kit-fitted TA-125 came apart. Fro m the start it was obvious that the bike . is close to being sorted out - de Lespinay just took off and left. After de Lespinary pulled in to the pits, John Lassak and Jcff Steele on more conventional Yamahas, with Mike Velasco on a 200cc Kawasaki co n tinued to swap places, charging underneath and past each other with alarming regularity . Lassak was ahead at the flag, with Velasco 's front wheel a maximum of six inches off the winner bike's rear wheel. Steele was third, close behind. Keith Code had no competition in Open Production, Open 4-stroke GP, or Super Cafe . Turning 2: 14.09 as his best lap, Code went fully five seconds a lap faster than he's ever ridden at Ontario before. On his fourth Z-1 ride, it would appear that Code has figured out how to ride the bulky, 120-horsepower (at the countershaft] Pops Yoshimura machine. Code retired while leadin g Super Cafe by a 'w hole bunch when his front brake line failed. Scott Clough (Hon 500) won after jim Haberlin's Triumph split its cylinder. • In winning 500 production, Dick Fuller (350 Yam) ' put himself in the middle of a terrific battle for the 750 Production win between jeff Steele (Hon 750) and David Breetwor (Tri) 750). Breetwor won, and Steele finally was able to pass Fuller for good, but it was a long time coming. Out-powered on the banking, Fuller hustled and stuffed his way through the infield , diving underneaththe larger machines in ' the 16-17-18-19 series of corn ers time Open Pro Randy Blevins Chay-Zeds Sadd leback's Satu rday MX. Comprende yous? after time. In the heat of the dice between Steele and Breetwor, the lead changed many times, with lap times hovering around 2:22 - the fastest the , pair have turned a t Ontario. Steele's bike had more mid-range and top-end power, but Breetwor had the drive off the last : tum, coming from behind to pass Steele at the flag . David Emde left everyone behind in both 250 and 350 GP, winning the combined 350-500-Open GP class overall. Even Whitney Blakeslee (Kaw 750) and Steve Mallonee (Ya m 75) couldn't stay in ' front of Emde; Blakeslee 's bike wasn 't running perfectly, and Mallonee's did heart-stopping wobbles down the front straight until he pulled in. It seems that Mallonee, a friend ' of Steve McLaughlin and Hurley Wilvert, had . moved back his bike's engine as per McLaughlin/Wilvert spe cs. "It's rcally not a bad idea as long as there's nothing bu t' corners," said Mallonee. •
