The tr ails zig-zagg ed d own mountainsides be twee n the m an zan ita an d over st ones. The dust was t hick here too so th at it was easy to m iss the sh arp turns. Righ tin gthe bike o n a steep slo p e an d re ga ini n g t he tr ail co u ld be exhaust in g and unless t he re w as a road or a clear path at t he botto m o f tha t mountain the do wned riders mi gh t as well for get a shot at a trophy . But m ost lik ely t h er e w as an even more difficult obstacle ahead. M an v sec tio ns of th e co u rse ran th rough de nse groves o f sm all p in es . TIle trees were so close t o gether tha t the riders co uld n' t help but run straight into low han gin g branches or righ t over the trees the m selves. T he A riders had a difficult time finding the trail through this jun gl~ since the arrovv s co u ld n' t be seen an d there was, practically speaking, no trail. Later riders co uld gu ess the route by the bare branches strip ped of pine needles and tire m arkings o n th e ground. In o ne , cas e a limb caug h t a m an's helme t a nd je rked him from th e bike to the ground. One rider was injured when a sh arp tree limb ran through hi s arm and a co u ple of o th ers hurt th emselves in o t her ways. ' Apparently m ost riders th ought it . was worth it because most o f the co m p lain ts were . a b ou t mileages a nd . times. Some A riders felt t here were discrepancies at a few chec ks alt hough at this wri ting no p ro t ests have been lodged. So afte r a gru eling 9 5 miles o f a very t ough enduro th e fini sh ers go t their p ins and the ones wh o had it al l to gethe r waited fo r the final word on tr ophies. They deserved them just for survivin g • th is enduro. was sent to the semi. Mr . Ro oney took the win in the first semi followed b y Terry Graham. and Jerry Bau gh . who both avoi d ed co n tac t with Dal e St etler, wh en he went down and used up , his fron t wheel. The second semi saw .. Rollin ' Rich " MacMurray . Butch Corder, Paul Orlandi an d Ken Eggers all in tigh t" formation. Eggers had the lead until he went d own hard o n -the backstretch which put Corder a head until MacMurray edge d him at t he fini sh for th e win. A sm oo th ri ' gave Nic k Geran io th e win ove r J ohn ~eni n i in the Di vision 11 Main. In th e Divisi on I Main th at foll owed, Greg Ferguson co m mande d an ear ly lead u ntil he went wide on lap th ree and was p assed by Charley Morse and Mike Faria. Faria just m an aged the win as he and Morse finished wheel to wheel. Mike 's effo rt s earned him n ot only a lip- lo ck from t he Trophy Girl, hut, also a year's supply of .ice cream fro m a lo ca l icc crea m parlor. It was a cas e of whodonit as it appeared that all fo ur riders in the Scratch Main broke the starting tapes. As the gate went up for the second time, Mike Roone y took th e lead foll owed by Ri ch Machlurray, Butch Co rder and Terry Gr ah am. MacMurray st o le the lead, but. Rod Spencer was the on ly opening night double winner, taking the Expert 125 and 250. The 125 Novice class . which 'see m s to draw every newcomer to racing. again produced the m o st ex citement b y sheer numbers and en th us ias m . Wayne Busb y (Ya m) outdistanced th e {lac k, allowi ng Norman Combs (Suz) and Mat Pemberton (Suz) to fight it o ut fo r second. Danny Ro se (Su z) worked his wa y th rough th e tr affi c to win -th e 25 0 No vice event. The Mini s. wh o clock tim es eq ual to the b ig boys. provid ed th e crowd with minibike riding at it s best. David Rosa (Yam ) trophied twice, taking both the Expert 80 Modifed an d 100. • Nor-Cal Speedway By Greg Joyce SACRAMENTO. CAL., MAY 21 The stands were packed with fans as Speedway race rs entered their second week of racing at the Cal-Expo Fairgro unds. The AMA sanc tioned program fo llowed a standard fo rmat havi ng hand icap hea ts in all divisions fo llowed by scratch he ats fo r Division I. . _ The highlight of the sc ratch heats came in event 13. when Mike Faria, Mike Rooney and Denny Robinson all appeared to tic for second pl ace . The cro wd was up-in -the-air for a minute until Rooney w as declared victor, and Paul .Orlandi and Dave Faria topped the Main event portions of the second round of Thursday night Class " An speedway racing at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds under the shining light of the AMA. Pro 'co rnp director Mel . Parkhurst was on hand to co llect the license ap p licati o ns and fees and get the ball to rolling. In the night's action John Gennai found t ime off from his bowlin g leagu e to win the first Handicap heat on the Ca l Simpson racing team . The second heat went to another Cal Simpson te am member Terry Grah am. Dennis Robinson co llected some back yard mone y in ' lieat . three with Jim Odom holding onto second ov er Mike Faria . Brother Dave easily won the fo u r t h hea t an d so me y ar da ge t agged o nto himself. Se mi winners were Cliff Ball an d Ro b inson. who p ick ed up so m e m ore back yardage cash and will lik ely go th e 5 0 if he keeps it up. In ' a m atch race o f last week's Main even t winners Dynamite Dennis and Loone y Mike Ro one y put o n a great sho w for the fans who rewarded them with a standing ovatio n as the y sh oo k han ds d own the back s traigh t . Ro oney won it by ab out a silly little millimeter . A special match for Al\IA sho rt t rack hero es saw Rick Delacy outclass Odom and a fal ling Gennai on the Snooky Owens sponsored bike. Junior speedway was once again a m atter for the gray gh o st and Lightnin g Lan ce cam e off the 4 0 to win over Steve Lucero and the Kirby boys dressed out in brand new leathers. Paul Orlandi corrected his bungle in the first heats to pass Duane Yarrow at the ch ecke re d for the Trophy final. Dave Faria led the Handicap Main from wire to wire. T he biggee was a close ru n for Or landi who picked the pole with Marty Ben ck and J erry Bowe rs close by and Dennis on the o u ts ide. Dennis jumped a tad too earl y and broke the tape. When , the sta rt got to go ing Orl andi had it his own wa y with Bcn ck in for secon d and . Bower s only getting in one la p du e to old age o f the throttle. • Results in Results Sect ion.
