Six hundred enduro riders kicked up enough dust here to replace every grain th at left Oklah oma in th e th irties . I'hats be cause he left o n th e first minute and led th e whole e nd u ro - " I ....as so determined to sta y o u t front and ru t of the du st that I hit a few chec kp o in ts early.'The C riders at the end of the line were generally co m in g nto th e checks la te because they couldn 't ma in t ain speed through the ~ aze . . It was a very good e nd u ro despite the dust. The So nora Pass M.C. lai d o u t a challenging 85·m ile co u rse wi th nicely rarie d terrain and trails. Fo r every rough section of tr ail there was a cor respond ing section 0 f fire road so that th e e nduro never becam e a "survival of t he fittest" situa tion . T he re were p laces wh e re you had to wriggle aro u n d t igh t turns in the m an zani ta and the re were others wh ere you co uld glide along und er the pine trees o n hard packed trail. . Uphills and downhills were not a big factor in th is enduro although there was one uphill just beyond the first c hec k whic h caused a bottleneck for a few C riders.' Th e so il was loo se an d afte r the A an d 1l rid e rs ha d passed thro ugh it was p lowed up t o th e point wh e re you had to have a good run at it . Th e re we re some water cross ings d espite w ha l has be e n said abou t d ryness and d us t. It wa s amazing 10 see the num be rs of riders who were wat ered o ut a t eac h little stream. There wer e two freakish obstacles so out of p lace and unexpected on that dry ru n th at t he y no d ou bt astounded and amazed th e m o st h ard core enduro riders. Out o f that whole expanse of se mi-arid , hot, filthy fores t the layout crew fou nd a pat ch of snow. It lay o n a gen tle slope clo sed off at each end by th ick wo ods. It was about fifty feet wide and at th e lower end there was a d eep, muddy trough . Many a rider, unprepared for this sort of thing, lost h is co o l a nd landed on hi s ass. The second dirt y trick was a po t hole across a fir e ro ad. It must have been two feet deep a nd brim full o f wa tery mud of about th e co ns iste ncy of chocolate fudge. If yo u had' any sty le at all you wou ld be bombing down t he ro ad as fast as you could imagine , gogg le le n ses co mpletely b lacked o u t by a lay e r of dust , going hy ins t inc t alo ne - an d th en pow, sp lat, klu nk, yo u su n k quietly in to th is hog wallow. Endures are su pposed to be un p redi ctable bu t this w as beyond the beyond. Eve n Ro n Martinez fo u nd himself slightly su rp rised an d considerably slowed down by th is revolting predicament. But the enduro had a good ending, the last p iec e 0 f the course wa s pav ement and down at the end ot it there was cold beer and finishing p ins .
