Jam min' time - out of the dust and into the mud with the Washougal 125 Jr. C's, Dave Hubbard (HIO) and Bob ·Cicerchi leading, more or less. Pro woes at Washougal By Jan Newman WASHOUGAL, WASH., MAY 16 The weather fooled everyone this time. The promoters were leary that the predicted late week rain would tum the tr ack into a ". 28 muddy mire and held up the watering. The rain failed to show. While all classes have their problems at an y track, Washougal see ms to have a special jinx for Pro riders. In the first 125 Pro moto the lead was taken and lost by Mike Kinnear (Hus), Kevin Jansen (Kaw) and Les Womack (Yam). Womack held what looked like a sure thing until he bailed off his bike like he'd been set afire . There were only a couple of lapsleft. He returned with tools to straighten his shifter in record ' time but the pack was gone, dropping him to 16th. Clay Azar (Yam) inherited the _lead with Ron Dimeo (Yam) breathing down his neck: Clay led the second moto all the way with Womack. pushing hard. Ron Sun (Yam) tallied a 4-3 record for second. Mark Gregson (Kaw) moved out from seventh to win the first 250 Pro race. Les Womack (Yam) moved along with him from ninth to nab second. Scott Isbell (Suz) lost his second place to a ' bro ken sprocket. The second moto was led by Joe Sandgathe (Kaw) and Womack until they tangled. Troy Folck inherited the lead until Barney Newman (Hus) and Gregson went by . This chase went all the way to the flag leavin g third pla ce nearly half a lap behind. Troy fin ished second overall with a 4-3 record. Newman tried to fell a t ree in th e firs t moto fini shing eighth. Th e jinx carried into the Open Pros, too . Womack was used for traction in the first scr atch putting him out. Newman led until his chain broke, taking the case, too. Skeet Hise (Yam) took the lead and won. Montey Mitchell (KTM) was firmly in second until a rod put him out in the last lap. Gregson made a couple of leisure laps on his souped up 400 Kamikaze and parked it. In the second moto, John Sparks (Suz) led most of the way until he crashed and went from first to last while Skeet was somewhere behind him blowing a head gasket. Brian Hall (Su z) went on to win - pushed hard by Vernon Gabbert (Hon], • SVS MX at Plymouth By Sallee Hilton PLYMOUTH,CAL.,MAY 16 Danny "Magoo " Chandler, the KTM rider from Foresthill, was a runaway winner in the 125 class and put in a healthy bid for Open honors as well. Magoo got by Pat Richter, also a KTM rider, in the se cond lap of the first Open Expert run and stayed ou t front the rest 0 f . the way. Charlie Halcomb (H us) and Ron Junkert (Suz) were running evenly spaced in third and fourth, not realizing that Floyd Davis (Suz) and Robert Norton (BuI) were pulling up closer behind. Junkert found out the hard way when he went down just before the checkered flag and they both zipped by. Halcomb took the lead in the second round, with Richter, then Magoo, t hen Norton following. In the middle of the third lap Halcomb vanished with me chan ical problems. Richter, now leading, proceed ed to build on that lead to about 200 y ards . The stran ge thing about Richter is th e e ffo rt less appe aring ride that puts him so far out in front whil e he doesn 't even look like he 's go ing fast! On the other hand, Magoo is a real cro wd ple aser, bouncin g o ff of berms an d flyin g over jumps. Meanwhile Norton was st ill han ging in th ere for third , but dropping off the pa ce some, and Davis was moving closer . Norton crashed hard and managed to ge t ba ck into the race in tenth place. Davis took over third, Junkert was behind him for fourth. In the 250 class, Jim Lesniewski (Hus) and Pat Richter each collected a win , but Dave Longcor's (Bul) twin second finishes gave him top money. Richter had crashed in the first lap of the first moto, and was running 21st at the end of the first lap and only made it up to 12th by the end of the _race. Lesniewski led every lap by a good margin although Brian Jodry was gaining until.his Suzuki played bucking bronco coming off a jump. J odry, being a good sport about it, played rodeo too and bulldogged the RM to a halt, remoun ted and had only lost one position. After his display (wh ich brought cheers from the cr owd ) J odry's , bike started running sour and he lost a few more positions, finishing sixth. Longcor, Kevin Henry (Bul), Tom Rapp (KTM) and Rick Woodson (Hu s) were in front of Jodry. First Henry and then Longcor had their tum in the lead of the second moto while Richter was moving up from behind to take it over in the third lap. Longcor stayed second to Richter til the end and the action was for third between Jodry and Henry . Jodry finally got far enough out on Henry to settle the question. • Lodi ST Series By Ann Carr LOD! , CAL., MAY 15 Blistering heat durin g the week and stiff winds on Saturday turned a well-prepared oval into a slip pery, narr ow groove for this ne xt to last short track in Lodi 's spring season . • Outstandin g Novice rides tonight not on ly showed evidence of more future stars on the horizon but also threw many of the high point r aces in to co mp lex situations. Borrowed ma chines fared well as Stockton 's Eric Lewis climbed aboard Billy Arbogast's Honda and proceeded to attack the 80 Novices as if he'd ridden the scooter all season. Steve Mason of Monterey was second. Open Novice Jim Womack, aboard the Al Haner Su zuki, worked his way up to a first ever win . A b udding ice i1 hockey player, Jimmy looked as if he 'd never been away in onlyhis 'seco n d ride of the season. . Meanwhile 125 and 250 action leaves those two trophies in a mad scramble. Bruce Sanders of Modesto and Richard Amaiz of Stockton fin ished 1-2 in the 125 Novice Main to complicate that one while Robert Stockdale's Kawasaki cap tured the 250 Novice Main and moved him within striking range. James Green's Junior win further complicated action. • Tulare Pro Half-mile JJ By Cosm ic Cat & CO. TULARE, CAL., MAY 16 Track conditions were a little rougher tonight than the previous Tulare half-mile, but it looked as though Ted Davidson didn't even fl notice the track 's condition as he sped to the Junior/Expert combined win. Joining fourth heat winner Davidson rl on the main event starting line were fast qualifier Brad Hicks, heat winners Steve b Fortune, and Richard Warren, and the , only Expert at the event, Frank Adamo. v Robert Murray was the lead man off the 2 star t followed by Warren and Davidson. Position staye d th e same through lap seven when David son got Warren in the..... fourth turn. lie then st arted pressuring Murray for th e lead through laps eight ru, and nine and on the tenth and final lap , I took th e lead in the first turn and on to the win . Murray finished second with Warren third and a hard-chargin g Eri c Gifford fourth. Expert Adamo left the track early in the Main with handling problems.
