Rubly & Derhammer battle it out at AMC Bell aboard a big four-stroke Honda. Will Harper (Mail, who ' usually dominates this class , really had to work for his money this evening. In the first moto he got lost in tra ffi c, having to work his way up from dead last to second, and there was no way he could catc h Bell. In the seco nd rna to . Harper got a better st art and soon moved up behind Bell. Harper finally managed to " pass and pulled out with a substantial lead fo r the win with Bell fin ishing second. T he 250 Pro class held a nu mber of By Danny Raymond ORANGE. CAL., MAY 23 AMC's Open Pro division again proved to be one of the more competitive Pro races. FMF 's Bill Rubly, Maico m ounted, held off a very close Jon Derhammer to top the Open class . FMF aces, Cliff Lett and John Atwood went one-two in the 125 action, Cliff winning both m otos by only a small margin over Atwood. As th e Open pack sped in to the first turn , Bill Rubly em erged out o f the dust cloud first, with Mark Rodman (Kaw], Drew Nelson (Suz) andJon Derhammer keeping it close. As Rodman dropped to fourth, and finally DNFed, Rubly, Nelson , and Derhammer got down to business. The three finished in th at order but it wasn 't th at easy a win for Rubly. On the last lap Derhammer had kept within ten feet of Rubly and in the final turn, J on p ut a last minu te pas so n Rubly. He wen t d own an d almost lost his second place to Nelson . • Again in the sec o nd m o to , Rubl y and Derhammer ran a very close race. It seem ed Derhammer's Wheel smith Montesa h ad more radical power, but Rubly 's Maico was ideal for Saddleback's dry track and he pulled off th e second mo to win. Derh ammer, Gillman, Nelson and Greg Smith (Mai ~ rounded out th e top five. Results in Results Section . So, a seven year old moto rcycle can:t win races? J ack Keese (MaiI won the first moto followed by Hateley. In the second mota Keese was un able to start, leaving it wide open for the rest of t he riders. Hateley and He ndrix along with Jeff Vidic (Mail and Will Harper (Mai l changed po sitions on every co rner. The race wasn 't deci ded u n til t he very last lap with Hateley co ming ou t on top and Hendrix second overall. • Results in Results Section . Money IT after a hard fought ba t tle with Mike Laney and Mike Ti dwell. Tidwell pu lled th e rabbit out o f the hat at the last minute to fin ish second with Laney third. In t he 250 Expert IT Tidwell was off the line first but AI too k over on lap . two and never gave anyone else a chance. Mike was second and Brian Mingus third. Mike Tidwell had a very prosperous evening winning both the IT and half-mile 125 Expert classes and the 250 Expert half-m ile fro m AI Glover an d Dorothy Rowe. Mike Laney soothed the pa in of his loss in the mon ey r ace by ru nning aw ay from Joe Flores, Jr. and Pat Dobbins in the Open Expert IT. Tim McWhorter was out again aboard the Butch Silva tuned Yamaha. Like last week he again hit for two, winning the Open Expert half-mile and the Money Race, but he had to work for them because Vern Maxwell "was righ t on his exhaust p ipe the whole way. Eddy San Roman pulled a real "sneaky" in the 250 Expert Twi n half-mile, Terry Statu m grabbed th e holeshot and appeared to have everything we ll in han d with seem in gly more po wer than anyone else. Not true! On the second to last lap Ed dy sudde nly move d around Terry and walked away fro m him like he was tied'to a rock and went on for t he win . 43'year-old Jim Pitman showed the yo u ngs te rs that age doesn 't mean a darn thing as he rode to a sm ooth, convincing win in the Ope n Novice IT.
