Spencer VIRGINIA CITY, CAL., MAY 9 Husky' pros Jack Johnson and Larry Roessler made mince meat of the Sunday show with Carl Cranke the big boy Saturday, Johnson had little trouble despite not having had th e lead until the third lap and then enc o un terin g an outright thunder and lightning storm that turned the dry and du sty pit area into a quagmire. Yet before the end of th e nearly five hour ev ent, dry and nearly dusty conditions returned as parts of the over-If mile course weren't even touched by the hour long storm . Rick Shirey led Doug Winchell through town on the first lap. J .A. Erickson was third through th e traps a minute behind the leaders with Rich Buttner right behind in wh at had to be a phenomenal lap havin g started in the 13th row with 15 seconds, or close to that, in tervals, Quite a make-up but he wasn 't to survive the bru tal pace. Steve Subith held off Johnson for fifth on the first go·round with Jim Johnson right behind and wild Willy Onga trying to hang on to their coattails. Mark Mason had Terry Gough to conterid with to round out the top ten on the first lap while Carrol Brown, Bob Haynes and Larry Roessler were still struggling with the heavy dust. Shirey held the point through camp on lap two but this time with the Mint 400 winner just behind and trucking with very consistent 28 minute lap s despite the impending dark clouds and bursting rain . Roessler, on a 250 Hu sky, still was sort of in the back some six to eight minutes during the early laps , but was holding a consistent pace that would carry him to about a four minute second pl ace with corr ec tio n . The rain started with quarter-inch hail. Some of the mudders were smiling but that didn't seem to help guys like Bruce Kelly who was unhappy that he couldn't make up any more time than he did with the downpour. It Seems that the rain just filled up the dust-filled holes where the nasty rocks lay. By lap five Johnson had a four minute spacing between himself and Shirey with local do-righter Terry Gough a co m fo rtable third. Drop-outs at this time included such notables as Rolf Tibblin, Winchell and Joe Simas who had done well the day before on a 100 until a sizeable crash forced him to be pulled out of six mile can yo n . One rider was reported with a broken foot At lap nine the · Husky team had it th eir own way as Shirey dropped back and Gough couldn 't get his throttle to operate co rre ct ly . Terry stopped to fix it and lost too much time. He wound up fifth overall just a minute behind Jim Jackson, another one of the consistent kids . Johnson took the checkered just about two minutes under the five hour mark with lots of mirth and froth to celebrate th e win . Bob " Haywire Haynes was one of the last to take the white flag and was th e seventh man to make.the ten laps ; if so he will obviously win the Old Timer's class a gainst such real goodies as Ray Hawley Slayton, Bill Marshall, "Biscuits" Verbiscio, John & KJ , J ack Lewis and Hank Coscio . • It Johnson wins again at Cherry Creek By Dorde Woodruff JERICHO; UTAH, MAY 16 The smoke bomb for the - 16th annual Cherry Creek Hare & Hound went off promptly at 10 AM, to the left of the route used for several previous years. Lea ders were well spread out already on the back of the ridge behind the bomb. Riders reached the fir st checkpoint at 10:30; first Novice came by ten minutes later. There was some confusion after that first desert loop as a few riders didn't seem to be able t o locate their pits. Kris Morgan, second at that point, ran out of gas on the following sand loop, finishing 49th. Club members were worried that the sand loop was too long since the sand had dried out during the week, but riders didn't co mp lain . Jack Johnson was ahead by eight minutes at 12:37 when he reached the juniper-pinyon of the excellent mountain loop. Dan Fuller, who had been third after the first loop, made up a few minutes on the mountain loop, finishing just after Jack. COtton Guio, of the well -known racing family, fourth a fter the desert loop, was also fourth at the finish. First Novice, George White , finished at 2: 55. Just after 4:55, when the fmish closed, came Susan Andrew, the first wo man to ever complete the course in any way. 281 entrants made this one of the biggest Cherry Creeks ever. 20 riders . came from District 37, the rest of the fmishers from Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Colorado , Wyoming and Arizona. The high proportion of finishers, 129, indicated a good course, unlike some previous years. Rider comments were favorable . Wind and rain Friday night damaged some of careful Dave Spencer's signs on the mountain loop. There was inconsistency in danger markers in the first loop, due to different crews. Salt Lake Motorcycle Club members, increasing in number and participation in Cherry Creek the last two years, are working hard to keep the race a significant one and improve it every year. Jack Johnson is only the second person to win Cherry Creek more than once, having also won last ye ar. AI Rogers one 0 f the or igin al boosters of the race, won in '62, ' 63 , and '6 9. To celebrate the Bicentennial, AI rode again • th is ",ea r, finishing 48th. Results in Results Section. Touring - MXEnduro - Minis All Bik es In Stock se. 416 W.
