Marty , Dave Williams, T aylor, Glover and Mark T yer all had one heck of a battle go ing for firs t till Glover and T yer had a collision. Moates had blown it with an 11th in moto one tor fifth overall. Taylor's 5-2 rides were go o d enough for th e win. Hard chargin' Tyer worked back up to fourth and went home with second place cash. . Powell ORANG E, CAL., A PR IL 25 "The 'Hom looks like a freeway," co mplained Kent Morgan as he headed for th e sign-up table. "Oh, yeah? Well, you've got to ride to th e left of the banners, " he was told. "The left? That's a c1iffl" And a cliff is just about what faced the 90 riders turning out for today's climb because the Matterhorn had become too easy. Absolutely no one complained abo u t today 's climb being too easy. _ ~ In the first round of co m pe t it io n only Bill Correll, on a modified 650 Triumph, and Ed Shaver, o n a m odified 750 T ri umph , managed t o get over the to p . The second round saw only Gale Gran t go over , an d no o n e w as m ore surprised th an he. He was m ounted o n a . stock 360 Yamaha wh ich acco m plished wh at none of the "super " bi kes h ad be en ab le to do. Wh at m ad e this cl im b so unusual was that at ab ou t the 400 foot mark the trail veered sligh tly to the left , cu ttin g through unclim bed terrain. Little more th an wee d ch o p p ing had been done to prep are the hill which opened up th e ground, exposing the moisture that had been held by a he althy crop of poison oak. After all the slippery action that t oo k place for the first 400 feet , the super tra ction of the next 40 feet ca used _ bi kes to loop out one after another. The busiest man on the hill was th e hookman , Ron Powell, and hi s able assistant, Joe Stith. When it cam e time for the first move UPino one felt that the start would have to go very high to eliminate the three riders stilI in contention. Gale Gran t was the first one aw ay. His 360 did well, but his 399 foot mark , didn't look like a winner. Bill Correll was next and he managed to make it to the 46 8 fo ot mark. The bike looped o ut, w as m issed b y the hooker, and tu m b led nearl y 100 feet before coming to rest .. . on top of the gas tank wh ich had fallen o ff 30 feet higher. Bill was fine , but ' th e bike was out of co mpetitio n . Ed Shaver m ade his run, stop p ing just one foot lower than Correll , at 4 6 7 fee t. These tw o each h ad one m o re try at the h ilI. Co rrell borro wed a smooth running, mo dified 5 0 0 Hus ky. Smooth as it was, it couldn't go as high as h e had go ne on h is first run. Correll had th e hillclimb if Sh aver didn't bea t the 468 foot run, and Sha ver was o n the line . Shaver go t o ff to an in di ffe re nt st art. He slid b ack and forth across th e slic k hill , fin ally got righ te d , and turned 'on th e gas. Wit h out a pause he sailed that big Tri rig ht ov er th e top again. The climb wen t to Ed Shaver with a super run o n a super running bike. • 1It•• ,• • J ... nootD ~ co co S MID-AMERICA NAn CHAMPIOrtSIIIP OIOJUIOMA STA1E FAIRGROUNDS SUN~MAY2S SRA Tehachapi GP By Sebast ian THE BIG BIKES ARE COM ING !
