T he Experts, Am ateurs, and Novi ces were p oised, ready to run to their bikes for the LeMans start o f the Desert Baro ns Team Race. After several painful mom ents, the ba nner drop ped, and o ne anxio us ri der t ripped on his way to thi s bike . As the d ust clea red , h owever, it looked like th e race was off to a good sta rt. Racin g to the bomb, Bren t Wallingsford and A.C. Bakken despera te ly fo ught fo r the lead. Once p ast the bo mb . Bakken surge d ahead to ta ke t he first position . Passing the ban do leer to his partne r Bob Rutten , they were ab le to main tain and stretch out the lead to fin ish the fou r loo ps an easy firs t, way ahead of the pack. Rutt en blaste d in to the finish on th eir Husky with a rear flat, which had happened o n t he last half of the loop. It had given him a fe\ v problems, but not enough to slow hi m do wrn, After an interval that seemed like a dav, Terry Davis was spotted flying to war d th e finish flag, b ut somehow ove rs hot it. There was momen tary pan ic amo ng the spectators. bu t no need to worry, since he was fo llowed by his fello w clubmember Che cker Marty Reider, who took third. The team of Tony Greaves / Roy Fjastad nabbed the fo urth position, fifth was taken by the Brent Wallingsford/Dean Modese tt duo, while th e Brian Wright /Craig Kinn aman team finished sixth . The Novice co n tingen t was wo n by the Busse te am, Robin and Rollin. They wer e followed by J oe Whit lo we, who rode the four-loo p race sol o. T hese 36th, te ams finished 35th and respectively.
