Clark's Branch MX Championship By Lynne Diltz GLENDALE, O RE., APRIL II The fin al running o f Clark's Bran ch moto cro ss drew a full house as riders came " from most of Oreg on and Northern California for a championship event that gave do uble daily points. That added twist upse t two class standings and made "last m inute" winners of a co uple more. The 125 and 250 Juni or classe s had , to be divided and all three motos were run in reverse fo r all classes. Some had a hard time on the firs t long p ull fro m the starting line to t he top of the hill. Roseburg's Jim J on es did a spectacu lar get-off on that first hill when h is throttle stuck wide open an d bike and rider went end over end. J ones, h alf d azed, mad e a wi ld scr am ble for th e bike, trying to shut it off be fore the engine ble w. After a day o f sun and mighty fine racing, the poin ts were totaled and the big, season high-poin t trophies were awarded. A bitty guy from Roseburg won the Mini Expert division, Karl Talburt had it all nailed down. The 100 Kids class w as a doubter; throughout the season J oe Diltz and Tony Jenkins have traded places for first and sec o nd. Diltz ma nage d enough daily poinIS to cinch t he season h igh point, wi th J en kins too close for co mfort. The 125 Expert winner wa s Clay Watson, a Roseburg rider who won th at trop hy by a slim eig ht points over his brother Rock y . The 250 Expert winne r was a kid from Gra n ts Pass who has wo n the 250 season high poin t at most Southern Ore gon tr acks, o ne Bob Connors. Open Expert was another close one but the old screecher hisself, Skeet Hise , won it all on the last da y. For those of yo u who feel lost now that most of the winter motocross is o ver, take heart.
