Alex's best competition came in the Open where he managed a third from a poor start in the heat but dialed in starter Gerry Carr in the main. The margin of victory was shortened in an abbreviate d race which saw new Expert Phil Helse l miss the righ thander before the ju mp an d completely su bmerge in Griffi th Lake. Esca lon's Francis Lopes shut out current p oint leader Do n Taylor for the first tim e in ma ny weeks and captured second. Other fine rides were recorded by Scott Bak er who continues to blitz the 100 Experts, J e ff Mason of Turlock who came off a serious crash Saturday night to beat the 80 Experts , and 100 J unior Terry Lewis who is topping his class with regularity. Pioneer Arena will stage its last rough scrambles on April 25th with class "C" traction events to begin May 9th and 23rd. . • Results in 'Results Section. Winter Series finale By W. H. Spencer SEARS POINT, CAL. , MAY 28 Ron Self tried to dominate the entire Expert portion of the final round of Winter Series Motocross by running all three classes but when apprised of the rule allowing only two he dropped out of the lowest paying. one and went on to win the Open and take a second in the last 250 moto for a 1·2 co mb o an d seco n d overall. All this after winning the first t hr ee class moto s. The last of the five round series saw a very dry and hard track that left man y disgruntled but with the' near drought co n ditions of the winter mo nths, it was just too ' had. Lots ' of tire an d wheel problems. Mike Beier .sign cd up for his lust AMA/D·36 run and won the 80 Novice portion ove r Dave Jorgensen an d Bre tt Bisel who just recently started himself. Melissa Rose took the 100 Novice mini por tio n to keep the little la dy ra cers prominent. Greg Muscatel did an outstanding job o n th e 125 Novices. Greg, returning after an eight m o n th layoff, crashed in a pack just past the IU"St comer an d remounted dead last in the first moto, By the end of the first lap he was up to 17th.'out of 22 and then pic ked his way through to take the lead and the win on the last two laps. The second moto was easier and the win was en o ugh to make him a Junior. With Self out of the 125 Expert class. KTM teammate Dan "Magoo " Chandler had it to h ims elf with a p ush or so from D-36 No . One kid Ran dy Los h. Larry Lacey copped a big win in th e 250 Jun ior class despite a restart that left eig ht riders in t he snow fence of the lust tum. The 27 riders had a real good st art but d ropping into the tum to th e tra ck , o ne rider go t h it , was straightened up an d bein g in the m iddle of the pa ck, wo un d up ta kin g seve n others th rough the fence. . Se lf took t he 25b first moto win over Phi l Crane bu t Crane turned the tables in the second moto , Self to ok the lead o n t he sec o nd lap with Crane moving up to second on t he fourth lap and then getting by on the last lap for the c h e ckered with Chris Grewer outpoin ting the field for t hird over all.
