Thunderpussy • • • • SUNNYMEAD, CAL., MA R. 28 It was a CRC day at DeAn za, with intennittent cloudy skies an d coo l temperatures cre ating ne ar-perfect racing weather. The story o f th e day was not the we ath er, but the highly competitive 125 A mateu r/ Expert class. Worrying that she co u ld n't cu t it, but finally de ciding to try her hand racing with the 12 5 Expert gu ys, sup er lad y race r Sue Fish (Yam) holeshot the firs t moto and led the first five lap s of the race. ,Tyrone Brown (Suz), the eventual moto winner , was more than a little surprised when he realized the person in front of him wa s a girl. Butch Darling (Hon ) worked hi s way through the pack for an eventual second (on the last lap), but wh en he go t to Sue he found it real difficult to get by . Butch was later heard to remark th at he enjoyed watching her (fro m) behind . . . The second moto saw Darling first off the line an d first at the flag. Sue-per Fish go t a ro tten sta rt , and crashed twice in an attempt to m ak e up gr o und. She finished 12th and seve n th overall for t he day. She made her mark very well! Amate ur/ Exp ert , In the O pen go-r ound , Jim Con o lly (Mai) got a great holeshot an d ha d a good go at it wi th Chuck Pettigrew (Mai) for the entire moto. Jim led the firs t four laps, th en pl ayed follow-the-leader until the whit e flag lap when h e smo ked by Pettigrew on a ' downhill section an d motored home for t he win. In the sec on d m oto Conolly agai n o u t rode the rest into th e first co m er. Pe'ttigrew came on like a ' hou se afire, though , and passed Jim for th e lead. Conoll y stalked him like a cat un til an off co urse ex cursion set Jim ba ck six sec o nds . Not only did Conolly mak e up th e - deficit , but he again ricocheted p ast Pettigrew on the last lap. Pettigrew made a banzai last ditch char ge on the downhill before the finish, but Conolly held out by a spoke. T here was a light turno ut (seven riders) in the Women's Division. Expert Che lie Blythe (Hon) had an easy win in t he first moto after Amateur Gale Webb (Ho n ), who led the first four laps, had he r throttle arm seize up so lid. Gale 's ar m was injured in an accid en t and co n t in ues t o give her trouble. In the second moto Chelle took the lead from th e beginning and walked away with th e win . Diane Harmon again picked up second place with Gale Webb third. 125 No vice actio n saw Craig Go rmley (Ya m) in a classic ba ttle with Mic ke y McDougal (Ya m) in th e firs t moto. Craig led the majo rity of t he laps , in cl udi ng t he one th at counted. In t he second go-ro und , Craig again go t the holeshot and led for two laps, but Dennis Vetter (H on ) sm o ked by for' the' lead and pulled aw ay for a decisive win with Gormley in for second. The 25 0 Amateur/Exp er t race is under pro te st , with unofficial first overall Tim Welker (Suz) and second overall Danny Sanchez (KTM) ac cused of co urs e cu t ti ng. Danny maintains the spot where he alleged ly " co urse cut" was inside the ribbon boundary , and that fact makes it fair territory.
