With his hand in the air and another rider's hand also held high, the pack took off as Delno was left dead last at the .line . In th e fin al mo to , Doug Veercamp (Hus) was fir st ar oun d the initial comer but Delno had th e lead after one lap. Once in IU'St th e race was all but com pleted. Becker op en ed up a comfortable 15 seco nd cushion over seco nd place rider Buzz Presser (Hus) with Dave Carlson (Hus) and Rich Buttne r (Hus) trailing . Carlson dr opped ou t giving Buttner third in the moto whic h was en ough to place him in · runner-up spot behind Becker. Consistent Dan Waller (Suz), .with a 4-4 sco re, was good enough fo r third. Mitch DeVaughn looked good on his new Suzuki moun t , getting both holeshots on the 250 Expert to win both motos. Arnold Plant (Suz) gave chase in the clo sing moto but had to settle for second overall. Greg Martz was third after a good battle in the IU'St moto with Chris Hart (Yam) and Rodney Poque (Yam). Eddie Brown appeared to be right at home on th e tight track. Brown won both of. the 125 Expert races. AI Hall led the first part of the opening race but gave way to Brown. Track prep genius Harold Murrell took a half mile of . standing mud from six hours . of solid rain on Saturday and made a passable race track out of it to hold a benefit pro show for injured Mark Williams. Mark was in the pits for most of the day greeting folks, and despite a low turnout due to the inclement weather, smiles were aplenty and lots of good racing made for an enjoyable da y. Over $1500 was in the kitty with lots of extras from Bob Bellino and Jerry of Kandy Plates circulating through the crowd with stickies, It ma y not have been much but we all hope it will help. It was well past noon when the first bike hit the dirt with Rick Hocking having gone back to the magneto for today after his abortive attempt with total loss at Ascot. The Ascot set up had blown out a coil . It ran alright, but still was down on horsepower. Fo r q ualifying it was all Ste ve Eklund; the on ly man in the 26 second mark at 26:949 . Walt Foster tripped in second at a tad over 27 and th e ho t Hocking third at 27:247 a bat's eye in front of Terry Dorsch at 27:283. Due to the nasty hanging clouds it was decided to run the Expert heats first with J un iors second and then come back with the Expert Main in hopes it wouldn't rain. Sonny Burres ca me off tenth fastest time to lead the six lap per from wire to wire with Eklund getting by a very fast Mark Smith on the second lap to take De!no Becker on the t rail of that long-sought 0 -36 MX win. -Lay 'em down and pick 'em up time for the 125 Novices at Mary sville . ,
