In the opening round of 125s, David, also known as "Bones," took the holeshot and extended his lead. Meanwhile, a good battle was shaping up for second among Mark "Mad Man" Lawrence; Eddie Clark, young Scot _ Clifton, and the winningest CMC pro rider in history, Dave Pessy, Lawrence, who has just recovered from a broken wrist, held off the mass to claim second spot behind the high-flying Taylor. Clark rounded out the top three. Moto two, and another Taylor holeshot, but this time John Atwood (Yam) hit the first turn clean and . battled for second along wi th Lawrence and Clark. The final moto also had Taylor with almost no co mpeti tion. Lawr ence gave David a little run for his money, but it still wasn't enough. Lawrence placed second overall with Clark taking third in • the final standings. The 250cc Pro division held a surprise as much improved Bill Chapin captured his first overall, victory of the year at Irw indale. . In the first . five-lapper, Davy Carlson took th e victory af ter a bad start. Cha pi n came back stro ng in moto two, as Carls on again suffered a terrible start and was well back in the pack. Davy was having gear box trouble and co uldn't m ove out of the corners very we ll. At thc checkered flag, it was Chapin for the victory followed by Car lson and Frank Serjeant (Suz], The fmal moto supplied some very exciting racing. Both riders were tied in poin ts as they 'en tered the final five- lap go . Carlson can tinued to have bike trouble and could not catch Chapin . Ch ap in took the yictory with Carlson second, an d new Pro Frank Serjeant third. ' The .5 00cc. Pro class also had its share of excitement as Val Tamietti (~lai) and Luke Messer (Mai) went in to the last moto tied with three points. At the start of the final round, Tamietti took the lead over "Big Luke," but Messer came back to pass Val on the final lap. However, Luke had to go in to the far corner a little too hard and dumped his Maico. Tamietti went by for the lead, but got a little too sideways and almost highsided. By this time Messer was back on his mount and ready to' challenge. Finally they both moved through the finish line with Tamietti taking the win, Messer second and "Jumpin Joe:' Johnston filling out the top three. • Results in Results Section. 'Bobbi eams' her new leathers By Elaine Jones CORONA , CAL ., MA R. 24 Bobbi Hunter captured her first win- as an Amateur and stole the show by m aking it a double. She held her Dad to a promise which netted her a new set of leathers when she got that first win . The 250cc IT was the first to rail as she held off Mike Allen. She turned around and did the same thing on the half-mile, _ The 750cc Expert half- mile started out with a fu ll fie ld o f some of the most respected riders ' around; Go rdie Kid d, Robert Murray, Steve Fortune, Den nis Briggs and Walt Foster. The semi claimed Steve, but when the main rolled around everyone else was on hand incl uding Eddie Lawson who was testing a machine. Eddie's bike was running super and he jumped righ t ou t on top and was gone. As the laps wore on attrition took its toll, leaving Foster and Briggs who looked to be playing games with each other on their Yamaha 500 ITs. Eddie was not being scored but was still eating up everything in sight. including lapping Walt and Dennis. At the end of 15 laps, Dennis had the win and didn't even know it. Walt collected second and Robert Murray, on the basis of most lap s down, was third. David Callaway and Mike Stewart earned transfers to Amateur due to their performances in the 250cc Novice goes . David won both, but the h alf-mi le was by the width of a tire over Mike. Fred Conover came a step closer to his trans fer to Amateur as he won the Open Novice half-mile an d Bob Bell too k the Open Novice IT. Mike Tidwe ll took the 500cc Expert half-mile over Lawson , and also the 125cc Amateur/Expert IT over Fred Conover.
