He took the lead first round, with Don - Grigsby (Yam ) and Rex Hailey (Yam) right after him, but fell off in tum one leavin g T-Bone with a clear shot. Second roun d , Nichols again fought off Grigsby and Hailey as they leaned on each o ther on th at far lefthander. Gri gsby won it in th e last round. When Nicho ls overslid, T-Bon e grabbed th e o ppo rt u ni ty he h ad been wa tching for and to o k ove r. Th e Gripsters decided to put Arvil Sparks and his 500TT in th e Open class , due to his past pe rformances as a Pro. One rider thought Sp arks had ca use d him to fall down in th e esses, but he thought wrong. Still, Arvil was blamed for it and th e other rider tried to pay back the favor. Cooler heads prevailed when they came into the pits as Sparks was re ady to repay the co mplimen t with a strong right hook. Ah , the ten sions of racing! Don Frauenberger ' (Yam) wound up winner overall but William Edrnonstron (Tri) from D-38 gave the homeboys all they wanted. Vic Hannan (Tri) also had it all together an d ended with second, Edmonstron cam e in third overall, Sparks on the 500 fourth and Jerry Peters (BSA) fifth • . -. Mike Montgom ery (Yam ) led every lap of the first m oto and Arthur Junker was solid in second. Sivage and Hardison followed the leaders but d idn't put out mu ch energy trying to get around anyone. Steffen was third. Mike got off again in first for two laps but Steffen stuffed his 500 Yamaha under Montgomery to steal away the lead. Mike held second, and zhird went to Sivage. Lawson lets loose at Corona By Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL., MARCH 17 Eddie Lawson, test r iding Pete Pistone 's super fast Bul, made it a winning combination as h e ran a way from t he field in both the Open Exp ert 500cc short track and half-mile. Mike Tidwel1 col1ected win s in the l 25cc Expert short track and hal f-mile as wel1 as the 250cc Am /Ex Single short tr ack and half-mile. . --- Rich Warren defended his week-old title as king of the 750cc Expert half-milers but it wasn't easy. He didn't get around Terry Griner and Craig Armstrong until lap f ive of the six lap race. Freddy Conover riding his new 350cc Kawasaki on the half-mile , out-distanced Ken Griner a nd Lou Gimenez to take the Novice win, Adding insult to injury, the Novices were combined with the Amateurs and Fred almost ran ou t his teammate Denny Aguirre, who ran second to Bob Graves. Don Grigsby went out on top in the 250 Expert Twin and never faltered. Chuck Bittle was the winningest rider, outside of Mike Tidwel1 , . col1ecting gold in the Mini short track, I25cc Novice short track and half-mile and second in the half-mile Mini. Kirk Johnson managed to grab the Mini half-mile go. Steve Karsten put his 100 Kawasaki right at Chuck's back wheel but just didn't have the power to out-run the larger bike. . I Bill Dobbs and Rob Selvy shared the 250cc Novice wins with Bill taking the short track and Rob the half-mile. • _.- . ~ _ •• and 20 ye ar old Ray St afford was king drover for th e night. In the first heat Bill Myers tr ansfered to the main and , J im Summers was the hot shoe of the second heat. Eight riders challenged the first six semi-positions which would get them into the main. Ray Stafford took off in the lead and hung on. Bob Selvey • took second. Jim Wright, Terry Williams, Russell Sanborn and Robert Murphy were the final riders to hold 'a ticket for th e event. Bill Myers shot off . the line like a bullet but didn't have the pleasure of leadin g very long as Stafford crammed his Kawas aki under Myers to ta ke over th e throne . Jim Summers got his two cen ts in as he dove under Myers . ' • to steal second. Results in Results Section. .••• • AMEMX By Ted Titmas VALENCIA, CAL., MARCH 14 Every week it seems like a completely new course is laid out at Indian Dunes leaving local riders few if any advantages, Arnold Comproni (Mai), in the 250 Junior class, must have felt this week's course was laid out for him. From the moment he exited the first comer, Comproni never looked back on second place Scott Panning (Bul) and took both motos wire-to-wire . The profit motive in the 125 Pro class had Sambo's mounted Mark Gambetta (Hon) coming out of the first turn in the lead and on the gas in both motos. The second moto , in a breathtaking display of riding, al1 eyes were on Bobby Kline (Hon) as he ate up the ground separating him from Garnbetta, but on the sixth lap Kline's pipe fel1 off, fouling any attempt to catch up and he settled for second. ~~ • • • ~ • • • • • •• t...~ • • • • • •
