T&M Engin eering brought out an impressive squadron of 125 Pro aces, . wanting badly t o sweep the class. T&M had what takes with ra cers Bru ce McDougal , Scot Clifton, Ro n Turner, and the list goes on .. . Couple th em with the quick, high -strung T&M ma chines and you have a very threatful group. T he team took home three o ut of the top fPve spots, but was den ied .vict o ry d ue to a we ird scoring sy stem, which Dave T aylo r probably doesn't co nsider too weird, since he took the overall with 12- 1-2 rides aboard his clean Pasadena Honda. Anywhere else Miller Ma no pilot , l\la rty Mi ller would have snatched top cash with his much more co nsis tent 2 2-5 score. First 12 5 Pro mot o , action was the best dice seen at any race , bar none ! SCOI Clifton, Mart y Mille r and Radical Ron -T urner were awa y fro m the p ack and into their o wn private wo rld of heated dueling. Each mach in e was running totally on the p ipe and th e tri o wasn ' t backing o ff an in ch _from th e insa n e p ace . At the. n ag th e ga p was th e same if no t closer as Miller edged alongside Scot as th e checkered ca m e down. Ron was o nly a few in ch es back fo r third. Neither of the two ambulances even had to twitch, which sho ws the riders really had it to gether and th at Ascot is a safe trac k. TI,e Mini di vision was a real go firs t mo to be tween Pet e Ha mes (Ho n) and Steve Karsten un til Karsten , after go ing down t he straig h t n at o ut like a 4 0-incher , tied up. The rest o f th e motos were between Hames, Ch ris Connors and David Dove. Duane Gallage (Yam) led all ten laps o f the 125 Novice main . Dyl an Neihart (Yam) moved up to second as J ack Smith, Steve Griffith , Steve Polson and Jim Strain (Hon) staged the best scrap of the race. l\like TIdwell made a clean sweep of the 125 a nd 250 Expert motos. In the 125 class the Yamahas of Rob Pfetzing and Ch arles Garroll really mixed it up lap a fter lap with the Hon d a of Danny Per kins. Steve Wosko ski had a miserable day . wi th his Yamah a , in cluding mech an ical woes an d a fall , but still ended up fifth. There were three heats ' of 250 No vices, an d D-3 8 's Do rothy Ro we (Ya m) led hers f ro m st art to finish. It loo ked like she m ight repeat in t he . main, bu t Dylan Neihard t p icked a better lin e aro un d th e o utside of Do ro t hy on tum one and .to o k over. Ro we fell hard on the right hander after t he jum p but got up an d finished the race wh ile Dylan had Michael Allen and J oe Steffan righ t o n his rear wheel at the finish, It loo ked like Wayne Rainey 's day for the 250 Amateur win , but in the last moto Wayne withdrew in a hurry . Later we were shown what was found ·in his Bul's exhaust pip e ; piston pieces and th e wrist pin! Charles Schleiger emerged first overall , then Paul l\IcPherson and Lane Dennis, all o n Yamahas; Former number one plate holder St eve Scott showed up fo r this one and he's still trying to figure out Mik e Tidwell. "How can th at kid go so fast without a front wheel brake? " Tidwell even had throttle problems in one mo t o and still go t first over all. Th e sidehacks h ad en ough for two classes. The Imken/Nelson Yamaha, th e first round of th e ligh tweight b ash, was n at making it , but unfortuna tel y ·seized on th e last lap . The father-son team of Burns /B urns Jr. put their Honda ' o u t in front altho ugh Glavin/Schuman (Hon) gave t hem a - fair figh t. In the he avyweight d ivisio n, it was the . bellowing Honda of Masell a / Bryan that wo n , alth o ug h th e challe nges from T rue/Fischer. (11-0) and Hooker/Stevens (lIon) were serious . In th e big bo re divi sion , 500 Novice win ner David Reinhardt (Yam) trade d th e lead a few t imes wi th sec o nd place Wayne Mel an son (Ya m) .
