As Turnbo blew away in the fmal heat, the showdown for runner-up wen t to Janish, who recovered from ' a rash of balky starts to nip Anderson by one poin t in the overall tally. Despite a spectacular endo in th e third round, Beeville 's Rey Longoria (Bul) endured to take fourth ahead of Louis Kirland, the-lone entry from Mississippi. • Turnbo tops 'Dome-cross amateur show By Dave Nielsen HOUSTON, TEX., MAR. 12·1 3 Although never having raced a Husqvarna previously. Dicky Turnbo' of Killeen, Texas outclassed a field of AMA Amateur/ Results Experts at Houston 's Astrodome aboard an L&L Cycle 250 Husky, fmishing 2·1 -2-1 for the four motos spanning the Friday and Saturday night program. Unfortunately for the spirited Louisiana contingent, moto winners Keith Payne and John Neal both ended on the DNF list, as Texas riders swept the top four overall places, and Louis Kirkland (Yam) of 'Jackson, Mississippi marked fifth. Devised as a filler between the professional "Supercross" Classes, the 250cc mounted Amateurs provided plenty of excitement and drew some of the loudest cheers from the crowd, which averaged 25,000 each night. Close quarter racing and untimely get-offs kept the action lively, because after all, these guys don't have many chances to see "their names up in lights. Even veteran announcer Roxy Rockwood got caught up in it a couple of times. Cajun Keith Payne (Yam) looked mighty strong after his first moto win, but- he took one fall too many in the third moto , crashing painfully into the tunnel under the infield jump. Later that same race , Turnbo's lead went , away while he cured a dead motor of a gro u nded kill switch, giving J o hn Nea l - I 1. Dicky Turnbo 2·1 -2 -1 (HU5) . 2. Kurt Janish 34-3-2 (SUZ) . '3. Texas Stadium to Turnbo By Dave Nielsen IRVING, TEX., MAR. 19-20 Husqvarna-powered Dicky Turnbo completed his domination of the 250cc Amateur motocross .pro- . gram here in the home stadium of the Dallas Cowboys, winning all four motos to back up his last week 's victory under the 'Dome at Houston. Against a field of riders from Texas, .Oklah o ma, and . Kansas picked and invited by the American Motorcycle Association , the from Killeen, Texas 16-year-old highlighted the . non-pro racing between 250 and 500 class professionals riding in the annual "Super-Cross" series of stadium races. Turnbo led co mfo rta bly in the first moto until traffic slowed him toward the end of the 17·minute race, closing the ~ap for second-running Kurt Janish (Suz ) of Plano, Texas, wh o moved to within a b ike length at the checkers. Two quick Kansas riders, Richard Hird (Mai) and David Lahey (Pen) put in good third and fourth efforts. A three-way bout in round two had the stands buzzing as Janish edged by Turnbo and then by Lahey, who slowed suddenly with a tweaked shifter, but held the ro cking chair between the iwo Texans. Janish appeared ready to go in the winner, but late in the race killed his 'Zuki in a corner, handing the point to Lahey an d Turnbo . Seeing his chance, Turnbo leaned on Lahey and took a second straight win, while Janish recovered to finish second. The third heat saw Turnbo , Lahey, and Janish finish top three, with Hird dropping to ten th af ter a 3-4 showing Friday night. Moto four was another chance for Janish, but just 'as Turnbo was moving in to challenge, Kurt's gears locked solid as he powered out of a corner, and Dick stroked in for an easy win, capp ing off a great two nights of gassin' it only a foot of dirt away from . the plastic grass tread by the likes of Too Tall and Roger the Dodger. • Results 1. Dicky Turn bo 1-1 -1-1 (Hus). 2. David Lahey (Mal). 4·3·2-5 (Pen). 3. Rlch.,d Hlrd 3·4·1003 4. Randy Hu'sey 9-6·8·2 (Y.m). 5. Kur t Janish 2·2·3·18 (Suz) . Cyclesporfs MX revival By Dave Nielsen CONROE , TEX. , MAR. 14 Mostly : neglected since its glory days in -the early 70's, Cyclesports Park has been shaping up again since its re-opening last summer,
