results in th e Venezuelan F750
round. Initially Gary Nixon was
declared the winner after -the two
IOO-mile legs which were run in
steaming 100 degree heat jIater, in-the
"official" results, Steve Baker was
posted as winner with Nixon second
overall. The results were protested by
Nixon with a meeting scheduled today
(March 22) to resolve the alleged scoring
error in the results. Daytona winner
Johnny Cecotto was a runaway winner
in the first leg, but retired with ap par en t
heat sickness in the second 100 miles.

TV money - what's a fair share?
Though riders were generally pl eas ed
at the extra shot of purse money
injected into the Ascot 100 lap "IT by
Wide 'Wo rld of Sports, there wa s a
groundswell of discontent with the
AMA 's share of the $10,000 th e
network paid for telecast rights. No one
seemed to mind that Ben Foo te (who
had done much of · the ·legwo rk) got
$ 10 00, or that J .C. Agajanian would
receive $3000 in a three-way split of the
remainder. But most objected to the
AMA ge tting an equal $3000 o f the TV
money , asking wh at the association had
done to earn it.
The AMA o ffice adm itted to some
embarrassmen t that the actual selling
job on the telecas t had been done by
the Ascot promoter, but went on to
point out that the three-way ' sp lit of
proceeds from sale of TV righ ts
(promoter-r acers-san ct ioning body) is
part
of
th e
normal sancti o ning
agreemen t an d: common to most
race-sanctio ning bod ies , NASCAR being
cited as fai rly typical. AMA 's Dave
Despain said , "I kn ow this is a hard
co nc ep t to sell to the guys wh o lay it on
th e line each race, bu t this is ho w it has
to be. "
