lik e to di sti ngui sh a resident owner as so meone who calls High Vista their res idence. All the fo lk s I tal ked with had no hard feelin gs ab o ut the bikes. They all seemed to feel that Sunday was t he only day that they had to put up with them . Two sai d most o f the vandal ism took place Monday thru Friday, when the police were n't ar ou nd. One of them went as far as to say that wouldn't be a bit surprised if some people weren't vandalizing their own pro perty. - The main argum ents against th e ORV people seemed to co me fro m t wo people who own ed lan d but di d no t reside there. When we asked why they didn't post t heir lan d, they said th at th e signs had been to rn down. On the other hand, I recall ab o ut two years ago one o f the old timers in High Vist a area had to enter the hospital for a time. Penny at t he store got a hold of our club and we got someone up there every wee k to 100 k after everything. Of course he lived there and took care o f his property. There see m s to be two types of individuals that can 'ge t areas closed , pronto. They are people who own ' property and can't seem to find t he time . to take care of it, and large landowners who own so much that they just' can't be everywhere at once. We are departing from the American con cep t when we allow people of th is type to have so much power. Monda y aft er Daytona, we had three editors flailing about meeting deadlines, frrmly conv inced that one of the others was umting about Gary. You can go to either of these two places any weekend an d find fr om 10 to 1000 bikers. V AN RATTLE Huntington Bch , CA Not qu ite. Edi tor Double takers I attended the High Vista meeting, hearing there had be en reports of vandalism and des tructio n o f private property in the area . Over the last three weeks there have been many citations issued for riding on private property , operating unregistered vehi cles on design ated roads, no fo restry sp ar k arresters, no off-road veh icle re gistrat ion and so fo rt h. At no time has law enforcement agency . a ny apprehended any motorcycle rider for destru ct io n of private ' property or vandalism. At one point of the meeting, one of th e bike riders asked the 'Sher iff Sergeant what areas were cl osed. He resp on ded that the entire area was closed. He followed by saying he had received a pe tition with 150 names on it , plus twenty-Six letters very ' cri tical 'of the off-road activities. At that point, one of the motorcycle people asked him to produce these documents. He said he would need time for the petition and when pressed, he admitted that he could only produce five letters: The next day I - talked with five resident owners. At this point I would I . have ad m ired and respected your organization (D RA) for a long time. Yo u have worked hard to keep the desert open for motorcyclists; your races are efficiently run, and you fre q uen tly pay real money to the class winners. However, I, for one, will not enter any of your events until you change the name "powder puff" to something more positive; for instance, " wo men 's division." This bit of news probably won't cause you to hold your breath until you tum blue, but the term " p owder puff" is archaic, falsely de scrip t ive , and downright un-hip, It · ma y seem like a small thing tb you, but many of the women ha ve worked long and hard to establish , themselves as "women racers, n not ding-a-ling "also rans" as the title " po wder puff" implies. M. THUNDERPUSSY Hemet, CA Bloody disapointed fan After reading yo ur article titled " Bloody Febru ary " in the March 2 issue, concerning speed way , I felt that I had to write to you . Is it the AMA 's stand to try to keep o ur rid ers out of world co mpe t itio n ? By . snub bing the FIM riders and not al lowin g them to come over and co mpe te in the "U.S.A. vs The World" mee t, they have not only hurt th e progress of spe edway in this country, but h ave hurt our ch ances of getting' a ride in the world finals. Gould y ou send me the address of AS CB so that I can write to them? They say they have banned the use of nitro and the use of 22 inch tires for 1977. We the fans pay the bill for the riders and promoters. I personally think this is a very big mistake and would like to let them know my feelings.
