Taylor, who was having mechanical trouble, barely finished fifth and the ' Bou nty ' looked to be in trouble. Entering the final round the pressure was on Taylor. The 5-foot-6 , 120 pounder had to win the final moto and Carlson could do no better than fourth for the Bounty to hold up. At the drop of the gate, Taylor was out like a flash with Lawrence right on his rear wheel. Carlson was back in seventh, but got his break when Clark, John Atwood, and two other riders crashed in a tight tum. Carlsg.n slipped into fourth ,,:nd proceeded to pass Steve Bauer for thud. Taylor took the moto win, but Carlson grabbed the overall .an d picked up an extra $25. The 'Bounty' would have been $50 , had Denton also been competing, but with no Denton , it came to only $25. Current CMC point leader Val Tamietti, aboard the Track. 'N Travel Maico, captured the final 500 Pro moto to defeat Bill Rubly, and claim his third consecutive Open class victory at Irwindale. Rubly came back to win the 250 Pro o v e rail by defeating Car l so n and Tamietti in the final moto . _ • Stello Real Estate Haberlin, Fuller· dust 'em at Willow 44738 N. 10th SI. West Lancaster. " 10960 Hole Avenue, Riverside, CA 92505 714-689-3166 Griffith Park graduate Jim Haberlin and qP up-comer Dick Fuller managed to win nearly everything they entered in a busy day of CMC club racing. Jim, on the Jag's-sponsored Triumph, notched Open Production, and Over 600 Four-stroke GP, but got smoked in Super Cafe by Lee Fleming on a turbocharged Kaw. Fuller ran a close second to Haberlin in a combined Open/750/500 race (not too shabby with a 400cc deficit), pocketed $25 for rust 500 "producer," garnered another $25 in 350 Production, then blew away 250 GP and 350 GP on his Korb's TZ mono. Behind Fuller in the sparse 250 GP class, another Griffith Park grad, Keith Code, put a race-long press on Tony Murphy, taking second in the closing laps . On an aircooled oldie, yet. Steve Malonee laid his ears back and hid from the Open GP field on a well-muffled TZ750. The race ended in ' some confusion when Jeff Gerkin Dick Fuller, full-on at Willow. cras h ed at the hook of turn eight, grinding his elbow to the bone just after Malonee took the checker. With some people still racing, others cooling off, and racers not seeing the ambulance flag till after they'd passed the accident, things got a bit zooey for the ambulance crew tending to Jeff where he fell . The huge mob was again in 350 Production, in which Fuller had to work for his win, drafting back and forth with Bill Henry most of the race, diving under him in turn one, getting repassed, running around him in turns seven-eigh t, getting pressed hard, finally using traffic to advantage in the closing laps to hold Henry about a second in arrears. Behind them, a dicey scrimmage between Jay Smith, Carlos DaSilva, · Clay Rice, Robert ' Lebo, Steve Gerki and Bill Pierce settled out with Smith clearing away from the others, who continued to circulate in two separate groups, finishing in order named. Got to ' mention Shawn Largy's waterpumper ltaljet. He hogged the water jacket out of a .solid block of aluminum at Burbank High School's engineering complex. Or Dan Dierking's home-built Mono Yama 125 GP ride. Both are still sorting out, but prove that the SoCal backyard builder is alive arid well in spite of inflation and all the rest. Welcome big guns back~ By Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL., MAR. 10 They came, they raced and boy did they put on a show. The 7505 'were out in force with nine of the big guns on hand for the Open Expert half-mile. The 15-lap main saw Rich Warren pull out all the stops and go to the head of the pack to stay. Brad Neiks and Marti Hallkola of Arizona were in a battle royal for second until lap 13 when Brad got all out of shape coming out of turn four and crashed into the front wall. Brad walked away, slightly dazed, more concerned about the condition of his bike than of his person, which should hurt considerable today. Marti took over second and Terry Griner finished third. Jim Wright. of Corona took it all the way on the IT as Eddie Lawson put up a valiant battle on his 350cc Kawasaki to finish a close second. Lawson captured .the half-mile in the Open Expert 500 and left the battling to AI Glover and Dave Johnson with AI getting the nod. Little 13 -year-old Fred Conover, riding out ' of C. H.
