Glover and Taylor progressed to second and third and it ,tu rn ed into a three way dice. for top spot, with the racing getting totally radical the list half lap. Broc went wide into a turn and Taylor dove under for second, but the next turn Dave over-reacted and ' pitched the Honda sideways, letting Glover roost by on the outside. Taylor quickly recovered and was at Broc's side in seconds, looking for a fraction more horsepower. Three turns from the finish, Dave took a dump on a dry part of the track but still managed a third behind McDougal and Glover. What a race! . McDougal's T&M machine pulled 'em again the second mota, but Taylor hooked it out of the fJISt turn better and took command. Glover guided his DG jet into second the first . lap and wen t on to grab top position by lap ' two. Broc got on it and built up a fair lead, which McDougal was going to have to penetrate for top money. Jeff Matthews took the win away from Morris Malone in the 250 Pro class after' Malone ran into trouble in the second moto. Greg .Blackwell stomped the 500 Pros in the sec'and mota to take home the overall money. Wright holeshot the first 125 Pro moto, followed closely by Miller Mano's Marty Miller (Hon) and Ron Sun (Yam). Miller closed in on Wright and zapped him on the third lap, but Miller began to fade on the next lap, eventually finishing a distant sixth. Wright continued to pull away from Sun, who was soon overcome by the presence of Gerald Stewart. Stewart (Yam) got off the line last but moved rapidly through the thick pack and took over second on the tenth lap. The second 125 Pro moto got off with Wright out in front again. Miller was close behind and again took over top spot on the third lap. Wright kept a close watch on Miller, dicing for the next six laps, until Wright passed him going up the "ledge." Mike Raines , (MM Han) placed second overall , with two third place finishes, Gerald Stewart ran into trouble in the fmal moto, finishing in the money with third overall. , Morris Malone (Suz) had the whole pack of 250 Pros under control during both motos, easily holding down ' top spot, but was forced to slow in the final moto due to a rear flat tire on his RM. His only real threat came from Jeff Matthews, who took over the top spot in the second mota to go home with first overall cash with a 2-1 score. Hank Schmidt (Suz) racked up a 4-2 tally to . score second overall behind the Vey's Cycles rider. At the same time the 250 Pros were running, the 500 Pros came off on the second gate, causing a mass scene of bikes all over the track, making it'tricky to pick out the 250s from the 500s. But from the Earade of bikes came Greg Blackwell [Hus), displaying his smooth consistent style, winning the 500 Pro ' . • class. Jimmy Wright (Han) travelled from Arizona to captuRl AMC 125 Pro gold at Carlsbad. Jimmy zapped the two number ones in the" back section of the course and proceeded to pull out a strong lead. The lead was short lived however, when Jim was forced to track side with a stomach that was violently opposed to the rough pounding being dealt it by the track. McGowen was there to take advantage of Jim's condition and began the process of re-extending the lead. A freight train of riders formed behind second place Jeff Mathews (CA),. with Gene Foster (Yam), Gary Cox (Yam), and David Morris (Kaw) dicing over the . third spot. Morris put the move on the two Yamahas, but then fell and was regulated to fifth and the advances of Randy Russell (Hus). McGowen meanwhile, was styling out in first when the one lap flag came out. McGow<::n circulated one more time and . took the black and white a good distance ahead of Mathews. Gary Cox secured third with Russell (Hus) moving into fourth. " Jim Martin recovered enough ' to ride the second 250 Expert mota. Jim promptly holeshot the field (not a hard task when your brother's the local speed tuner) on his potent CZ, with Mathews (CA) and Mike McGowen (Hus)fighting for second. The Mathews/McGowen duel soon got close enough to Martin to kiss his rear fender. Martin just wasn't up to taking the pressure and crashed ending his efforts for the day.
