Years of "minicyc1e experience paid off for Doug Gaunce in a 40 rider 125 Novice bash, that saw the young Fort Worther come from behind in both motos and score I-Ion an SGJ Racing Yamaha. YZ Monos also took place and show, with Russ Hobb.(4-3) and David Banton (2-5) on top. Early 250 Novice leader Don Allen (Kaw) yielded to Brian Wil.on (Yam) in the first moto, and then lost a lap after heading the second heat, while Wilson went on to win both races and the overall easily. " The huge 125 Intermediate class was highlighted by a very quick, spirited group of leaders, including way-over-Sf) Ed Terrell (Yam), Steakley Yamaha's David DiCorte, Carter Yamaha'. Bobby Elliott, " big brother David Gaunce (Yam), and the Tiny Terror, David Jones, whose D-FW Honda pulled the field to the first turn both times, Jones' lead stuck all the way in round one, with Terrell, DiCorte, Gaunce, and Elliott trailing. In the second moto, DiCorte took away Jones' lead, only to be zapped by Gaunce two laps later. The three Davids continued the battle, but no Goliath or anyone else could catch them this time. With the checkers up and waiting, DiCorte got back by Gaunce and took the overall by virtue of 3·1 marks, edging Jones' 1-3. Terrell managed to fall on the last lap, and Gaunce's 4-2 was good for third over Elliott (5-4) and Terrell (2-10) . anticipated challenge from An Houston'. Glen Urquhart and Shaun Kelley in the 125 Expert was unfortunately short-lived, due to uncooperative qo m pe ti ti o n, and balky machinery, although Urquhart did run second for three laps of the last moto before dropping out. In total dominance of today's ankle-biter action was San Angelo Suzuki 's Mel Newman, who wen t practically untouched the whole time, while the rest scrapped for second. As ' usual, Killeen flier Dicky Turnbo (Yam) had to come from mid-pack starts, but super efforts got him to second by the end of each race, while Eddie Roberts (Yam, 3-5) and Glen Boyett (Tam, 6-3) picked up third and fourth . • I nnotoguzzi T ry us for Triumph parts • UPS same day [ ~ t70 E. ~a~~ o d Motorcycles 2509 Broadway Sacramento, CA 95818 :I: I . 916-452·5491 ~ I :E I . . - - - - - Trium ph -. : . . . - - Malcolm S m i t h . Leading tbe pack in the Mini Novice class were Joe Meza and Scott Bridges who battled it out all the way. Meza, on a Yamaha SO finally went on to win the class. " The Mini Intermediate class was a runaway for Mark Moseley sporting a Honda XR75 . Mark, a local boy, burned everybody on both motos. There was a three-way battle in thc 125 Novice class. Hooking it on here were David Campbell (Yam), Darrin Myers (Hon), and Larry Fletcher (Yam). Campbell went on to win the class . The best race of the day was m the 125 Intermediate class. Clint Knight (Yam), Luke Crow (Hon), and Willie Turlington (Yam) battled it out all the way around. Clint Knight finally came out on top. Jim Spurlock (Yam) won the 250 class . Jim was flyin ~ in spite of the mud. Ricky Sanford (Suz) came in second but just couldn 't quite catch Jim. The Over-30 class was dominated by Fly Man, J .T. Walker. J.T. was sporting a giant fly atop his ' helmet and with the aid of this and his Honda Elsinore he went on to win. • Schramm,Wharton collect Rio rebate By Mark Knowles " HOUSTON, TEX., FEB. 29 ,w < With ten tr ophies per class for the ~ Amateur racers and $1200 for the Experts, riders from several por-' tions of Texas as well as Louisiana' entered Rio Bravo in hopes of fame and fortune . When the 12 5 Expert class rolled up to thc line, it appeared that a showdown between top 125 talent would develop. Local. Glen Johnson, Bo Koch, Shaun Kelly, Steve Schramm, and others would be able to test their talents against South Texas flash Thomas James, the Dallas-Ft. Worth trio of Jimmy Martin, Louis Presley, and Richard Reeves as well as Louisiana import. Roger Bagwell and Ricky Madole. But finishing both races was the prime factor today as Johnson, Martin and Madole suffered problems and were elim inated early. Bo Koch seemed to forget about the talent surrounding him the first moto as he blasted through the first turn out front and motored away from the pack with only second place Steve Schramm catching an occasional glimpse. Schramm had an .eq ua lly impressive lead over the pack as Richard Reeves, Louis Presley, and Thomas J ames battled for third. Schramm grabbed the lead" of the second moto as Koch, Reeves, and Presley fought over second place. Koch moved into second with Presley in third while Reeve. faded in to fourth. But midway into thc moto Reeves put on a fantastic drive that carried him past Presley, Koch and Schramm into first place which he held until moto's end. Schramm (2-2) carried away first place cash ahead of Koch (1-3) as Presley (3-4) edged teammate Reeves (S-I) for third. A new face in local competition, Bob Wharton. came to Rio to teach brother ' Mike the art of winning and used the Open Expert class as his example. Wharton took the lead of both motos and pulled away to win unchallenged. Greg Howard would have ' liked to
