i ... . First wheels roll at Hillside MX By Pat Jaquish MOSES LAKE , WASH .• FEB. 29 Over 200 riders gathered as Hillside held its first race of the 1976 racing season. Changes to the track made it more demanding as many riders spilled on the sandy. 1.5 mile track. The 125 class was split in to four divisions as nearly 100 riders signed up for this most popular . class. Dennis Redman (Han) bolted into the lead in the first 125-A mota and held his lead to the finish. After a bad start, Ron Pomeroy (Yam) was able to maneuver his way up to second only to have his bike seize. Craig Sawyer took over second with his Yamaha and with consistent riding in the 'second moto was able to snag first overall. Ron Pomeroy returned in the second moto to nab first and show the local boys how it should be done . In the 125-C class . Greg McPherson (Yam) powered his way to an eas y first moto victory with alead that was never challenged. Rod Ostrium (Hon ) bolted , to the head of the pack . in the second moto when McPherson started in 14th place. Sparks flew as Greg passed everyone in sight within three lap s and was right behind .Ostrium . The two diced back and forth with Greg. emerging the winner at th e wire. Ron Pomeroy (BuI) and Dave LaPierre (Suz) quickly ran to the front of the 250A pack and displayed some of the best racing of the day. After matching the lead it looked as if Ron had it in the bag but Dave didn't give up. Both riders looked flawless but when Ron dropped his Bul at the top of the sand hill. Dave quickly scooted into the lead and a first mota win for him. The second moto was anticlimactic as Pomeroy squirted into a lead which he never relinquished. After bad starts in both motos, Bill Jones (Man) carved up the pack as he rode to a consistent third overall. • Mudders make money at Marysville By Sallee Hilton MARYSVILLE. CAL.• FE B. 29 It rained all night the night before the race and all morning during the Novice portion of the p rogram. Most o f the tr ack was hub deep. Steven Jiminez (Yam) had a kn ack for mudding it. and kept upright and running and in front the whole time. Tim Rosenberg (Yam) also did well under the conditions. FEB . 22 Suzuki mounted Jon Boyette carne from a 30 second deficit to grab the lead on the last lap from Delno Becker _(CZ) and take the overall victory in the Open Expert class. Becker, in his second race on his new bike. had led from the start and was just . taking things easy in the lead. Boyette was moving up through the pack and cu t Delno's lead several seconds as he completed each lap of the six-mile riverbottom course. Delrio was robbed of a sure victory on the last lap when he lost the use of his rear brake. This coupled with a first lap incident of hitting a tree wh ich ripped his front brake cable left the young rider brakeless on a co urse which featured a long stretch of pavement. George Chealtham (Ya m) nabbed first in the Junior class with Carmichael's Kevin Booth in second. Dr. Jim Heinrich. in o ne of his ' rare rides. took a very impress-third place. A very large Oldtimers class was present today and the class gave a good sho w of ra cing, perhaps the best of the day. George "Ho leshot " Becker on a very potent 250 CZ passed early leader Bud Hamilton (KT M) and Cloyse Holland and was well on the way to a trophy. As Becker, Sr .• was leading the gas line worked 100sF on the bike and drained the tank dry, Bud c.Hamilton took the lead with Husky mounted Cloyse Holland in close pursuit . lost the overall win when Holland got by with less than a quarter lap remaining in the ninety minute race. Greg Martz (Suz) was the tITSt rider to ge t going on the grand prix start in the 250 class, Dan Waller was a close second. but as they came by on the first lap Waller had took th e lead that he was to never lose. Martz hung on for second overall and second Expert ' rider Gary Cooper (Yam) finished third. The ra ce. of the day might have been the 125 class 'as two Junior riders James Hill (Han) and Scott Johnson (Hon) were. separated by only two bike lengths at the end of a lap and a half. Hill failed to finish the rest of the lap as his bike quit. . This left Johnson with an incredible lead over second place. and the only Expert rider present. . Dan McConnell. Johnson with only two laps to go had the misfortune of blowing up his bike . He pushed across the line but a lap down. McConnell too k the lead and the overall. Doug Veercamp (Kaw) rode a consistent race to take second and first, Junior followed by Tom Odekirk (Yam) and new Junior rider Scott Allen. t.O preseD~ (Special Novice qu a lify ing for April 2 half-mile night ope ner t o be held Sat u rday , March 20.
