Perris short track a TT series ~nds By Brad Miller PERRIS, CAL., FEB. 29 , , ' What an enthusiastic ending to the eight Week High Point Series as the riders battled right down the last race: Open ' Exp ert Bob Graves carne to race, despite a bout with the flu, and came out on top winning the High Point Trophy in his class. Grant Murray Jr., Open Expert Old Timer, had quite a day. Short Track went real smooth for him but then came TT practice. A rider ' crashed right in front of Grant causing him to crash on top of the other bike. He got bandaged up and even With a cut thumb, swollen wrist and a bruised leg Grant trophied in his race and won the High Point Trophy .fo r the Old Timers. Mike Tidwell won the High Point Trophy for the 125 Amateur/Expert class and almost won the 250 Amateur/Expert class but Joe Steffen stayed in there strong. Gordon Kidd,' 500 Amateur/Expert lost the trophy by 10 points after missing short track last week. The High Point Trophy went to strong contender Steve Bennett. A High Point Trophy was also awarded to Eddie Robison, age 7, Mini 50. The trophy was almost bigger than he was. The photographer had to change . film and Eddie said, "Hey' Dad hurry up,_this .tro phy is getting heavy." • Serrano takes two By Larry Owen PHOENIX, AZ :, FEBRUARY 29 After a weekend 'layoff at Canyon Raceway 290 riders were anxious to try out a new section of the 'track. The two new sandy straight· aways and a 90 degree tum proved to be very interesting, as well as a little hairy for some riders. . The 250 EXf'ert Class again had the largest entry '(18) and was the most exciting. Bob Blose (Suz) pulled the holeshot followed very closely by Carlos Serrano (Suz) and Doug Raines (Kaw). Serrano held it wide open and passed. , Blose as Roger Jones (C-A) worked his way from 'm id-pack to take over third from Raines. T.J. Warren (Mon) also passed Raines, but Doug started gassing it and passed both Warren and Jones back into third. . Bob Blose repeated the second mota start with another lead and Gary Hickerson was second, waiting for a mistake. But it was Gary who made the error of running off the track and losing some very valuable positions. Carlos .again .passed Blose and too k a commanding lead. Raines was a little ways back in third and missed all the racing · that was going on behind as Roger Jones and David Anderegg (Suz) fought over fourth . Serrano took first overall WIth Blose second, Raines third . and 1mbriale fourth. . Carlos Serrano (Suz) just seemed to have it all together today as he dominated both 125 Expert class motos and made it look alI so easY. • Results in Results Section Corona H-M NT DESE E a ST · By Elaine Jones CORONA RACEWAY, MARCH 3 Wednesday night was cold and the track wasn't in ' the best shape due to the heavy rains, but it was passable and the few riders who did come out did race, although some of the classes were a little strange. The first race combined a mini, a lOOcc and a 125cc, alI doing their thing. On the short track, Robert Murphy got it home first but little Chris Gables on his YZ 80 was right in there, despite trans problems, and collected second. On the half-mile it was two minis against a motorcycle, Again Gables gave it a good go but was unable to catch Walter Holder. Bobby Garmbedinn went out early with problems. The 250 Novice/125 Amateurs proved to be ~ very interesting race. Don Tortorelli was off and away on his 125cc Harley when problems hit and he was out. David Callaway, a 250cc Novice, looked most likely to succeed until Fred Conover and Mike DeBruyn got in on the .act. Fred on his 125 and 250 mounted Mike made it a race to the finish with Fred getting the nod. David was in for third. On the half-mile Danny Perkins had his 125 Honda flat smokin ' and nobody got even close, unless you count .the riders he lapped. This time Callaway wound up in the finisher's money. Mike Allen, a 250 Open Amateur, was the only rider to go home with a double victory, Geoff Dawson and Larry Matties were contented to follow - the leader which they did in both. The ,750cc motorcycles are back at Corona.
