Cordis held his position up to near the first check, but he then made a wrong tum and Mitch Mayes took over the lead. By the time Cordis found the course again he had been passed by five ri ders. He st ill managed to. place third Open Ex pert and sixth overall. A.C . Ba kken took over third when Tim Bowman dr o pp ed out, but was later passed by Larry Roeseler and Brent Wallingsford. Bakken managed to re-pass Brent to take fourth . The three long rocky hills must have been real interesting for the trail bikes. joe Lockhart managed to smooth them out to take first Trail Expert. joe has been recently bumped up to the Expert class and is doing very well. Phil Stumbo was the first Amateur rider in as Brian Wright and Roy Fjastad followed for second and third. Open Amateur Dan Baker, (rom the Vikings, finished first in his class this weekend. This is the third race in a row that Dan bas won. Ed Ogden and Damon Diruscio pulled in later for second and third. The Novice start was delayed a bit due to a rider injured during a practice bomb run. Overall winning Novice riders were j .C. Ray, Tim Edmonson, Pete Shepherd and Ed Winn , all in the heavyweight division. . Twain West had a great time bringing home first 250 Novice. Dave Phillips finished right behind for second. . There was only one sidehack out for this weekend's race. Dale Karell and Doug Maloney managed to fmisli both loops; an accomplishment in itself. ' Honorable mention goes to Torsten Corum for being the youngest rider to complete the course. When he stopped at the finish line an official had to help Torsten get going again because he couldn't reach the ground. I don't know. how he managed to get down those hills, but he finished and deserves.credit for doing so. I The Desert Squirrels did an excellentj job of marking the course.
