Abo u t this tim e, Richter began to lose su spension wi th a bad sh ock. On the seventh lap Hanlon began his charge with so me spe ctacu lar high flying uphill jumps. Having cut the lead to nothing on the last lap , Hanlon beg an to wo rk on the pass. On th e firs t uphill he made a move straight out o f flat track riding, Trying to fru strate Rich ter , Han lon went ou tside at a comer hoping to m ake th e fro nt mark move a tad to the outside in a bl ock attemp t and the n when he did , drop undernea th wi th a wh eel on m anuever. It was well don e but n o t p erfe ctly and Richter kept up th e charge d espite th e ro ugh ride. Then on the last few turns Hanl o n go t se t up for a ju mp ru n fro m th e outside o f the last co mer. It's a co mplete 180 degree t urn an d t he outside is b ad bu t it has a sligh t be rm (that Hanlon fell o n twice in t he first run). They we re even going into the co rner and it appea re d that there wo uld be no way for Han lo n to sec ure the w in but the co mbine d good horsepower and suspensio n an d t he berm m ad e it p ossible by abo ut th ree in ches. Scott Austin put his super mudder Maico to go od use in the first Open Exp ert moto winning handily as Rich ter cras hed a fence while leading in the ultra slick slime, finishing third behind Don Malley, In t he second moto it was allover with Richter t he undisputed leader, 30 seco nds o ver Duane J o ice who po inted fo r a third overall . Kent McConnell had a ha n dful of leaders in the 25 0 Novice class but they all man aged to crash . li e had a runaway going w ith Bill Miner inhe ri t ing second after a seven th pl ace start. · • Milan gets it on at Madera By Duane Garrett MADERA LAKES, CAL., FEB. 15 Milan Garrett (Mon) was the top money winner at Made ra Lakes to day , riding on a trac k which all of th e riders describ ed as being very rough an d wet in the traditional European MX st yle . The track featured a Johnn y Butler ·de s ign ed drop-off/camel hump j u mp which caused some spectacular getoffs. Frank Hannah (Hon) and Kevin Phillips (Bul) led the first 125 In terrnediate moto around the first tum ban gin g cases and handlebars as they went. Hannah overshot o ne of the backside tu rns o n the first lap allowing Phillips to take t he point. Phillips stretched out his lead, holding o n till the en d. Meanwhile Rick Elliso n (Bul), J eff Pac ker (Han) and Rodney Greener (Yam) were having a private battle of their own for third behind the leaders. Greener was able to pass both Ellison an d Par ker. H ann ah go t it all together in the second moto fo r th e overall. Phillips pulled in third behind Greener and it was go od eno ugh to give h im sec o nd overall.
