The fog didn't lift until mid-afternoon and in place of the usual rain the ra cers and spectators put up with cold temperatures all day. Yamaha-mounted Larry MacKenzie of Canada got the holeshot on moto one of the Open Pro and held back Mark Gregson (Kaw) from Salem, Oregon for 10 laps. Then on the last sweeping left hand turn before the finish over Rainier Jump. MacKenzie dropped low while Gregson rode the berm high and made it up the hill first. In moto two it wa s MacKenzie out front again with the Kawasaki right there again . But this t im e Mac was first over for the fla g. Randy Schweizer (Mail brought ho me a third each mo to for the overall - holding off Gregson ' til la p seven in m o t o one. The 250 Pro honors wen t to Yakima's Ron Pomeroy (Bul) fo r his moto finis hes of 1-2. Po mero y was a lit tl e slow on th e st ar t in moto two and ended u p abo u t mid-pa ck but the excelle n t lines through the turns and whoopdedoos gave him th at extra distance to fini sh righ t behind Gre gson. McConnell riding Expert 125 were the only team in the 125 division to take home atroph y . D. Willis, Amateur 125 and J . Blagg Novice 125 took those respectiv e classes. T he 250 class was the team affair. G. Martz/J . Dumm w as the Expert team to beat. The Open class returned us to solo supremacy, except in the Expert class where Charley Marshall and J. Greer riding a new Yamaha/Thumper led fro m start to fmish without missing a beat . The Dirt Diggers were expecting the co urse to be du sty bu tit rained the night be fo re and ex cept for some slippery co nd iti o ns on the bac k of the cou rse, it was a p erfec t race da y . As t his was one of the first Te am Races the Dirt Digger s have thrown th ere was some co nfu sio n in th e scorin g and in the ratings of the ridings. Helmet or tank card s would have be en a great assistance in the scoring hassle. and re q u iring distr ict cards would allevia te th e o ther. But, these were just minor flaws in a race t ha t was safe ,fun a nd wo rthy o f th e label Mar athon Madn ess. • Results in Re sul ts Section .
