The Sawmill enduro By Mike Kinsella UPPER LAKE, CAL., FEB. 15 Conditions were nearly perfect in th e tradition of the Sawmill mud, snotty uphills and even some snow. The North Bay Motorcycle : Here's what the experts say about the new 1818 MAICO AW's* Club ordered heavy snow, but all they go t was a healthy rainfall all day Saturday and early Sunday morning wh ich left the co urse in excellent shape. It was 83 miles of prime slime which had the consistency of tomato sauce over old crankcase oil. The course had originally been 100 miles in length, but an early morning check by the layout crew found the dry spots and quickly eliminated them before t he riders left the start line . Everybody fell down at least once. Well, almost everybody. There were some IS DT types who o nly got dirty and looked like they had fallen down. But most riders did fall down on the uphills be cause the uphills were very difficult to ascend . .. it wa s a lot like trying to ride yo ur motorcycle up your garage wall during an earthquake. T he Sawmill : " 8 3 miles of pr ime slim e . . . " with a bit of sce nic snow cover. The last gre at obstacle be fore the fin ish was a lo ng , steep hill co vered with creamy black mud. Even some "A" riders ad mi tted to ha ving problems on t his one. One 125cc rider co mplained that this hill j ust about ble w his enthusiasm fo r en d uroing this early in the spring. There were many complaints by knowledgeable riders about the accu racy of th e clocks at the check points. A protest may be lodged, as it is said that the finish checker held the nu mber five flip card for an extra minute supposedly to remedy some earlier error, thereby throwing the results of the following riders into some co nfusio n. Many "B" and " C" riders were disappo inted at t he lac k of finisher pins for their e ffo rts. Less than 100 riders o ut of 700 entries finished t he event. The pins may come with the res ult sheet later on, however. Overall, it was an en d uro which called fo r skill, physical conditioning and bike preparation beyond most. It was challenging for the "A" ride rs, difficu lt for the "B " riders and a traumatic experience for most " C" ri ders. It was just what one e xpects when he signs up fo r the Sawmill each year. • Results not availa b le yet. *AW STANDS FOR ADOLF WE lL REAR SUSPENSION .
