Mart y was led only once in four motos of co mp et ition, and it was by none o ther than FMF's little gasser , Warren Reid, who did a boss job of sna tchin g the holeshot aw ay from Smith. As the pack crested the top of start hill, it w as Marty and PK Produ cts hotshoe Dave Tay lo r wh eel to wheel for the ins ide lin e. As th ey mad e the t urn and headed down, Warren dialed it on and went for t he lead cu tting off t he pair for a one posit ion advantage o n the , National Champ. Reid was showing a great am o un t o f skill, keeping Smith at , bay, lap afte r pressuring lap. Meanwhile , DG Per forman ce mounted Gary Den ton continued to prove that he's getting migh ty serious by h an gin g o n to a solid u third wi thout showing any signs of slo wing o ff the p ace . Powell S UNNYMEAD , CAL., F EB. 15 A week's worth o f rain had made 'The Virgin', De Anza's big hill , fast , exciting and challenging. Dou g Hall was the first man to crest the hill. He took hi s su per Bultaco right across the line and wal ked o ff with first place in the 250 Modified Class and it wasn 't until Kerry Peterson mad e his 4 00 stock run that an other co mpe t it or marked an over. Only eigh t rid ers managed to make it acro ss th e to p in th e first round of climbs. By the end of the co mpe tit ion, from th e base of the hill, 25 of th e 9 0 plus rider s entered had man aged to top the hill. Mos t were in the b ig b ike classes, with only Hall and Pet e rson riding an ything sma ller than a 450cc mo un t. In any cli mb not ti m ed wi th clocks the starting log is moved upward on the hill as riders strive to eliminate each other from t he com petition . It was soon o bvi o us th at th e first move up was go ing to thin th e ranks very q u ickly. The n um ber was cut in half when only 13 made it ove r from th e first m ove u p. The second move up p oi nt had the co mpet it o rs dropping right and left . .. also upside down , sideways and in circles. No o ne wa s go ing to reach t he top ; now it was merely a m atter of who would reach t he highest p oint o n t he hill. Ther e was no running start, no chance to settle down on t he bi ke , or to plan t your feet solidly on th e pegs. It had be come a m ajor triumph jus t to get to the starting lo g. Doug Hall , the smallest bi ke in conten tion , managed to rea ch th e 8 7 foot mark, only about 30 feet abo ve the starting log . Craig Mock, mounted on a modified 360 Yamaha, stopped at 65 feet.
