They had half a lap lead on him. J erry Little (Ya m ) loo ked lik e th e 125 No vice winner, with two firsts, bu t dropped to sixth in the third round for a th ird overall . Curt Jensen (C·A ) took first overall with a third, a second and a first, while Honda rider Larry Bolin was alw ays right in there with two seconds and a third. Stylish Johanna Stenerson (Yam ) led the women home with no co ntes t. Sue Fish was plagued with an ill-shifting Yammie which fin ally destroyed any chan ce she had at reall y challenging Stenerson by chu cking its cha in in the last mota. Just before the second combined 250 Amateur/Expert mota, track owner Tom Fortune suggested some track maintenance but t he troops ta lked him out of it ; the track held up beautifully and had been prepared for days before th e event. That class really we nt flying over th e jump and Tim Welke (Suz) led them home with three st raight wins. Right be hind, Mark Cook, Fred Grie go , Eri c Jensen and first Amateur Mark Hood settled fo r different finishing pos it ions in each round. Un fo rt u na tely there were only three Op en Experts and two Ama teurs so they had opportu ni ties to play. Ch uck Pettigrew had ignition and shock tro ubles but that d idn't det er him o ne bit in banzai ng over the ju mp. He got two thi rds and a first: Tom Bice (Suz too k two seconds and a thad, bu t it was Paul Thede 'S two firsts and a seco nd on his e-Z that won. Gre g Hu mber (Mai) was first Amateur. The 250 and Open Novices ran together and th e difference in bike sizes didn't show to o mu ch, altho ugh the Open clas s appeared to be a bit more cautious. Richard Hernandez (Suz) took home first Novi ce, with a second and two firsts , and th e Open Novice winner was Hulon Morrow (Su z), with three firsts. All riders took th eir trophies ho me with them, the name plates to be mailed when engraved. Several riders said they though t the track was "neat " although some had trouble finding it since they had never been there for a TT. • Rubly wrecks Pro classes at Irwindale By Tom Blattler IRWINDALE, CAL., FEB . 13 Bill Rub ly (FMF) chalked third straight 500 Pro win the lights at Irwindale.
