FEB. 15 Van ce Schmid and Phil Stumbo cap italiz ed on th e misfortunes of earlv lead ers to sco re t he overa ll in DRA's ISO-mile Te am Rac e. It was th e first overall victory fo r either rider. Back at t he st art, it was Cordis Brooks (360 Bul) wh o to ok th e lead at the bomb and stre tc hed it out t o over a m inute by the end o f the fir st 25-m iJe lo op . Tim Bowman (4 0 0 CZ ) took over for Bro oks while Mik e Eckhardt (25 0 Hu s) r an in second. The J am ie Avels /D ave Wo od te am t ook over th ird in the pits from Allen Mee k and Chris Kallen . Birdie ( 125 Yam ) didn 't pit a nd moved u p t o fifth . Schmid (25 0 Yam ) had been the last o ff the st art lin e and his battle up t o fifth by th e end o f the first loop had been so amazin g th at Stumbo was still m aking adjust m en t s on his new CZ and the p it c re w literall y threw Stumbo onto Vance's Mono . By the end of the seco nd loop, Bowman had worked the lead in to a margin of several minutes , d esp ite th e CZ 's flat tire. Bro oks had lapped all the Beginners by the end o f the third loop an d th en gave the Bul t o Bowm a n wh o was aboard when th e sh o c ks fell ap art. T hat m oved Kall en (4 0 0 Yam ) in t o th e lead, with Stumbo closing o n him in sec ond. Ric k Shire y (5 0 0 Yam ) started the lo op in second pl ace, man aged t o gain 30 seconds o n th e lead er, but it was n 't enough. Sh irey was in for second , well ah ead o f Kallen , wh o had to ride th e last loop with only fir st and third gea rs left. They were the fir st all-Ama teu r t eam. Birdie an d partner Fred Strong finished fourth ; first sm all- bore . Rounding o ut th e to p five were Te rry Harris an d Bry an Bennett (40 0 Hus ) who had . worked th eir way up fr om abou t iO t h on the first lo op. J ames Dekoker an d Jim Smith (4 0 0 Yam) were fifth o n the firs t lo op amo ngst the Beginners. By th e third lo op , they were leading a n d won ahead o f Jeff Lindsay and Rick Zajic (250 Mon /CZ). Leslie Klug and Michelle Griffin (Yam/H us) took the Powde r Puff win , al most goi ng the en t ire six loops. Thc Min is on ly wen t tw o lo ops b u t they battled for the lead all th e way with Kell y Klin e and Ronn y Wilson (Ho n ) wi n ni ng by a slim mar gin. Sled Rider Bren t Wallingsfo rd was ho t on his tail with Mik e Ed mo nso n close behind . The y held these po sitions until the end o f the race with Charles Barney co m ing in fourth. These top riders h ad spread quite a d ist ance between them and the re st o f th e pack by the time they ca m e th rough thc pits. T railb ike rider Charles Hamill won his class with a fantastic 40-bike lead over the n ext trailbike. Charles managed to get 3 6t h o verall this weekend. Darren Kels ey an d Je ff Bennin gt on later ca m e in for second an d third pl ace. Jeff was first Amateu r Trail bike. Bill Od em deserves a p at on the back fo r this wee k's ride. Betwe en the pits an d th e checkered fla g, he managed to m ove up in position 28 pl aces . This entailed p assing four other Senior No vice riders to finish first in his class. The Am ateu r/Expert a nd Novi ce classes both start ed th e same time but had separate bomb runs t hat led th em into the f our Aces ' figure ei ght course . If you rec all, Desert M.C.'s race had a bit of tr ouble with ot h er clubs providing extra star t ing b anner s t o add a b it more exci te ment to th e start. The Four Aces had a cure fo r th at kin d of pra n k. Any club that dro p ped t he ir ban ne r at th e sta rt of the race wo ul d have all of their rid er s d isquali fied .
