0.37 Riders take over Elsinore By Andi Gangewer ELSIN ORE, CA L. , FEB. I . T he newest club on the racing scene, Rider's M.C., did a fan tastic job in spite ·of a slick, dry, dusty track and a bro ken water truck. A Vegas and w ound like a bucket ot snakes th rough some of th e m eanest des ert and mount ains in th e old west. • Mr . Ken Guid, a very d istinguished looking . 52-year-old businessman, dressed in a beautifully tail ored $3 00 bro wn west ern st yl e su it , white shirt, and t ie and polished co w bo y bo ots came all th e way from Big Piney , Wyoming. We. all ch uc kle d wh en he signed up and then told us the suit and boots were his ridi ng o ut fit! Our jo king turned to pure admiratio n when this fellow rode in to the fin ish line - ninth overall - wi th o nl y a sm all tear in his t rousers . His o nly di rt y tail ored co m men t was , "I thin k I musta hit a ro ck so mew he re au t t here !" All 17 5 riders knew t hat the Groundsh a ker race is laid o u t fo r Experts an d very go od Amateurs. Th ere were 15 almost eq ually spaced check poin ts and th ree m ajor gas stops. Onl y 4 7 riders made all the checks and we re regarded as finishers. T he rest either hung it' u p f rom exhaustion , and a few riders j us t p lain m issed some check po ints (dust n o d o ubt) . • new starting procedure was rigged up in the center o f the track and it worked su perbly. The riders mad e a sh arp left .hand tum an d th en o n around th e regu lar T .T . co urse fo r a new and in teresting ch allen ge. The 250 Amateur/ Ex pert race w as one for the record. Gr eg Zehner was the overa ll victor aft er a hard fo ug h t battle. J eff Springman too k the first moto wi t h no trouble, but th e re al ra ce was fo r second betwee n Eddie Beeson, Greg ' Zeh ne r and Mike Tidwe ll. As th e che ck ere d fell it was Ze h ne r and Beeson in that order. Moto two we nt to T idwell and Gr eg too k sec o n d again fo llo wed by Beeson . In t he final moto , Bee son snapped out in fro n t but Ze hner ov ertoo k him an d led for th e re st of t he race. Beeson and Tidwell w ere push ing . but Beeson went down and Mike to o k sec o nd. Overall wen t to Zehner, Tidwell second and Springman third. __ The Open Experts rolled to t he lin e and Don (T- Bone) Gri gsby ch al ked up a big lead right from th e st art. Steve Mille r was sec o nd, but no t for lo ng, as Steve Fortu ne roared past on h is big 750 Ya maha. Mo to two aga in we n t to T-Bone and secon d to Fort u ne. In th e fina l moto Grigsby go t o ff the line o n his 400 Yamah a firs t an d Fo rtu ne was right be hi nd. The white flag came out an d Steve made his mo ve on T-Bone and go t u nder him. Gr igsby didn ' t like t he second spot and ju st in time for the chec kers was back on to p . Steve had to se ttle for second an d Ch ar les Petty crossed the line th ird. On e o f th e biggest races of t he day was the 250 Novice class and Mike Alle n was the vic to r. The firs t race wa s pre tty wi t h no close we ll predictable co m peti tio n . St eve Lo omis t ook t he second, . followed by Bob Eary. Mo to two wen t again t o Mike w ith a great rid e. Allen had to pl ay seco nd fiddle to Steve Loomis in t he last m o to, Steve Col ford o n hi s Bultaco wa s p ushing Allen for sec o n d and slipped u nder h im to ta keo ver seco nd spot . As th e che c kered fe ll it was Lo o mis leading t he wa y ove r Co lford and then Allen . Allen held en o ug h po ints t o give hi m t he • overall. Don (T-Bone) Grigsby makes the win look easy in Dist. 37 po int-run. FRI.
