Perryton, Texas' Wes Anderson took advantage of Gary Sooter's misfortune and captured the exciting 360 Sportsman main event. Riding 250 Kawasa ki, Anderson outdistanced Mik e Arp (Yam), Terry Brown (Yam ) and Randy Hin ds (Han) . Anderson collected 250 p o in ts fo r his efforts and u pped his overall point total t o an eve n t 500 points. Despite his spinout in the semifinals, _ Gary Scooter still r em ain s atop the 360 Sportsman p oint standings with 1,000. Second is a tie between Terry Brown and Mike Arp. Both have 77 5 poin ts to their credit. • Cooper aces, Trey deuces Ponca City By Jack B. Harwood In the middle class war, J orski was chased closely by Chip Da y in both moto s, In the first moto , Day's failing front forks caused him to kill it in a tight down-and o ut tu m. In the second mo to , Day 's bad lu ck pursued hi m with a st uck throttle in the third lap after he and J orski had put the field behind them. When J orski and Cooper clashed in the Open heats, the excitemen t didn't last beyond a couple of laps. It was clearly J orski's day, as he steadily pulled out of range in each moto. In the 25 0 Amateur; Mike Williams rode to the overall win with a strong 1-2. Kim Blevins led the first m o ta un ti l he lost a pi pe. Carl Smith led the second moto for a co u ple of laps before being reeled in by the ch arging Williams, who then coasted in behind Ty Bowers (3 -1) . The 12 5cc Amateur race ended in a four-way tie at 5 points per rid er. Craig Johnson (4-1) took home the t all tro phy, while Cliff Grider (3-2) was next, ahead of Mark Dennison (2-3) and Shan Gore (1-4). The Open Amateur class had three riders t ied with 5 points. Jerry Fanning (4-1 ) beat out Louis Moffat (3-2) and Ken Co le (2-3 ). • PO NC A CITY, O KLA. , J AN. 11 Limit ed to two classes, Trey J orski picked the 250 and Open classes and drew winners both times. Chuck Co op er, faced with Stack, Kent ace Austin th e same decision, picked the 125 class an d first p lace money, but had to settle fo r seco n d in t he Op en clash b etween himself and J orski, ' In the firs t 125cc Expert m o t o , Gary Bowman (H on) jumped out in front and led Cooper (Pen) for three laps before he went a gear too low in a back course tum, spinning around enough to let Cooper slip in to a le ad he never rel inquished. A crash a t the start of the second moto das he d Bowman's h opes of getting in fro nt at pay time. By Greg Labbe AU STIN, TEX. ,JAN. 19 Cen tral T exans are blessed during the se three months of the year known as the off season by the presence of two of the brightest yo ung motocross stars in the world. Steve Stackable, an Austin prod u ct, and San Antonian Ken t Howerton came to Aus tin Motocross Par k this past Sunday for a little practice, a lit tl e relaxation , ~3-1007 and a little pocket money . They went away smiling. Steve has had his new Suzuki for only a week and although he had co mmented earlier in the week that he had a lo t to learn abou t riding it, on Sunday he was all smiles and smoke. It was obvious to onlookers that he had grown well accu sto med to his scoot in just one week. The bike Steve had today was a ' pro d u ct io n RM 370 which will be come his practice bike. For t he Florida series he will be on one of Ro ger ' s Trans-Am bikes, and for the Nationals he will be aboard n ew factory products in contesting both the 250 and Open classes. Things are lo o kin g good for Stack. Kent, on the o t her hand, is staying with Husqvama for the coming season and had a brand new 250 Hu sky with hi m . The o nly d ifferen ce in his b ike fro m stock was t he trip le clamp an d the Bicentennial shocks (red, white , and blue) . Kent was being fairly co nservat ive since, for one thing, he is already familiar w ith his bike and for another, he had badly bruised both his k nees and tom a fi gernail off in a riding accid en t n during t he preceeding w eek. He wasn't fee ling just re d ho t, but wi t h th e Flo ri da series co ming up in jus t two weeks neither he nor Steve co u ld affo rd to lay off this weekend. Kent won both o f his 250 heats with ease. With su ch ease in fact that as he o verhauled the last rider between himself and the lead in the second moto, he nonchalantly reache d up and pulled off his go ggles as if to say, "That's all fo lks." All this while leaned over and accelerating out of ia hairpin tum. Kent has class . The start of the second Open Junior moto was a n eyebrow raiser as two ancient ( 1972) CZS piloted by Bryant Tillson and Jim Stacey roared out of the first run in first and second place. Stacy went o n to win t he seco nd m o t o and seco nd overall fo r t he day . • VOLT. ~ t40W YAM Al-IA* SP£E.DO, T ,",eli HOlF PLuGS • "' MllSJ' WIIDl 11D'O~11l(', II'SmWENlS ~ Off' ~AD R1I>IIl6.
