Rick Buttner (Yam) did his trick start in the Open ra ce, pursued by Lonnie Murphy (!I us) an d Darrell Brown (KTM). Lonnie wa s in striking distance bu t had el ectric problems. Darrell doesn't seem to have his old lire so Rick just stretched his lead. The results of the remaining of the Open class is being disputed. I wish th e Desert Bums would be more positive in their course markings and instructions to the riders. , It co uld mean the difference between an a1right race and a super race which this one could have been. In spite of his four motes, Rich ter found time in between to watch a good bit of the Super Bowl action on portable TV. Right from the start of both Open motos, Richter's CZ was out front and running away . Bert No ble (KTM ) was second all the way bo th times, and the two shared th e purse for the class. There: was a little: more actio n in the 25 0 race . Although Richter (on a Honda for this one) had th e lead by t he end of the first lap, Dave Lon gcor (Bul), in the first rnoto, moved on him and in the third lap led for a short ti me before Richter regained it and finished with a safety margin. The second moto was three men short. Longcor, Hilton and Randy Losh (Bul) who had crash ed in the first, all had bike problems. Again Rich ter too k th e immediate lead. This time Allen Berluti (Hus) st ayed clo se behind for most of the race . Arnold Plant (Suz) worked up ' to th ird , and the three cashed in for overall in the same order. Eric McKenna (Ho n) won the first 125 Expert mo to, and in th e second worked his wa y to the lead again only to suffer a breakdown and push across th e line for a seventh. This was still good en ough for third in th e class. Mike Preston (Nog) was not quite so fortunate. In the first moto, it was McKenna and Preston close to each othe r , bu t way ah ead of the rest of th e pack wh en Preston 's bike "just quit" an d McK enna went on the win. Preston, however , had a good lead in t he second mot o wi th all but one lap to his cre dit .Al Hall (Ho n) and Robert No rto n (Hon) were seco nd and third in the first run, and reversed order in the second giving Norton the o verall win , and Hall second. Dry track at Puyallup! By Sue Sykes PUYA.LLUP , WASH .,J AN. 25 Minor-track changes m ad e the dry circuit a speed co urse - too fast acco rd ing to some riders; and broken front wheels kept many riders out of the money. During intermission the Pros rode WFO in a special "Dash for Cash" with Oregon's Chuck Sun on his Husky overtaking Gary Potts (Suz) midway to get the money. Rumors have it Sun's gal put up the $10 entry fee so she claimed the purse. Mitch Simmons, on a borrowed Yamaha, pulled off the "thriller". ride for the day as his feet came off after Rain ier Jump one. Simmons just wouldn 't let go, hung on to the bars for about 200 yards - feet draggin ' all the way on the left side. He finally got her shut down enough to hop back on and bring the bike into the pits. The ride must have been for the best because Mitch came out and won the 125 Pro moto two 'to take first overall. The leaders in this class had their share of troubles and spills. Bill Joyce (Hon) threw a chain midway into moto two after a win first time out. Moto one second place Ed Davis (Hon) got into a bad tangle on the next start and called it a day. Canada's Larry McKenzie got the holeshot both times in the Open Pro action and provided the spectators with some fine motocross. This 19 year old Yamaha rider is a true sportsman and a joy to watch. In the 250 class the front wheel of McKenzie's bike got a flat side and the insides looked like they were going to blow an y time. In moto two he came out with a third. , Chuck Sun put to gether ' a two-two' for a second overall in the Open Pro. Mark Gregson (Kaw ) and Randy Schweizer on his Stackable Maico split three-four for th ose overalls. Brand practices for Florida By Duane Garrett DUNLAP, CAL .• JAN . 18 Dennis Brand (Hus) , Clarance Derrick (Bul), and Billy Woods (Hus ) took hom e th e bu cks in th e 125, 250 an d Open Pro classes at Dunlap to day .
