He will team with Mik e Hensel on a Har ley-Davidson in th e Par ker 400, a bike , buggy ra ce to be held in Arizona and Californ ia in February. After winning the Imp erial Valley Motorcycle Clu b's 65-mile race, Stearn , on a Rl\I·250 Suz uki, said he took the ,lead fro m Dane Wagn er (R M 370 Suz) about t hree mil es ou t fr om the smoke bo mb. He surprised people in t he pit area .b y arriving back in less than a half hour, havi ng co m pleted the first 25 ·mile loop. The sec on d loo p ran a differe nt course and included so me surface less boggy than the stuff that stal led man y riders during the first loop. First Amateur rider Scott Hatfield said, "The deep sand of the first loop was wide o pen riding. The second lo op had so me sand but some hard stuff too." ' Dane Wagner (Suz ) was close to Stearn near the finish of th e second loop and then came Johnny McDaniels (Yam ). Behind them, 20 or 30 riders were returning about a minute apart. Others apparently had trouble just com ple tin g the race, sand being the villain . This was the first time this portion of the desert has been used for a motorcycle race in about two years.
