'; =Western hotline ~ hotshoe Tim Tope grabbed the lead from Billy Brown in the 125 E - Gary Ogden blasts his way to a win in the first of four races in the Electro 'Helmets Series at Escape Country. Ogden takes round one of Electro Series By Danny Raymond TRABUCO CANYON, CAL. , J AN. 18 Suzuki's Gary Ogden rode off with th e overall win in the first race of th e Electro Helmets Series out at Escape Coun try . Gary 's ro ughest competition ca me fro m Maico m ounted J ohn Hry n kiewicz . In the first mota Ogden mo ved from the back of the pack up to the top position in only six laps. Hrynkiewicz hel d on for a close seco nd an d D&G 's Broc Gl over gassed his lonely 125 in fo r third. Tim Lunde (Mai) was fourth and Jeff Vidic (Mai) was fifth. The second mo to saw Hrynkiewicz with anothe r great hol esho t leaving Ogd en, Lun de and Marinez (Mai) to fall in be hind. Three laps later Ogden was pushing a small lead over Hrynkiewicz. Lunde held onto third while Glover pu lled into fourth after Marinez lost his chain. Hrynkiewicz led the final moto wire to wire while Ogden fought his way up through the pack. Glover had trouble in the first tu m, ended up in dead last, an d just settled back in the p ack. Miller , Man 0's Marty Miller was running in third, just ahead of Lunde, until he highsided allowing Tim to move up . • CMC Night Motocross By Tom B lattl ~r (Mai) following very close. Johnston suffered a terrible start bu t m oved through the field qu ic kly . Rubly, an expert at pressu rin g riders, wo rked on Elliot for the lead, finally moved by, and Messer began to challenge Elliot for second. J ohnston was n o w on the rear wh eel of Barn es fo r fo urt h. On the final lap, J ohnston passe d Barnes over the "Wheelsmith" jump, bu t in the last tu m Joe got caught in tight and high -sided. Rubly took the win followed by Elliot, Messer, Barnes, and Cu rt is Lessel (Suz). Motos two and three proved to be Luke Messer benefits as the veteran Flying Machine Factory rider smoked the competition. The two wins gave Luke the overall, with Barnes and Ru b ly rounding out second and thi rd . The 250 Pro class welcomed the return of CMC Night Nationals champion, Jeff Vidic. The first mota was dominated by 12 5 hot shoe David Taylor in only his seco nd race 'aboard a 250cc machine. Taylor defeated Bill Rubly and Suzuki mounted Ken Ehlers; Vidic finis hed sixth. Ro u nd two fou nd Taylor and Rubly u n ab le to make the • start. Taylor suffered eye .tr ou ble in the second moto of the 125 Pros after he was hit in the face with rocks and Rubly had mechanical problems with his Maico, Vidic ran second to Mark Marinez (Mai) in the second mota and third went to Val Tamietti (Mai). The final saw Vidic come from fourth to lead and cap tu re the overall honors leavin g Tamietti with second overall. 125 Pro Rob Zamora (Han) put in his best ride at Irwindale with a first mota win over Gary Denton (Han), John A twood (Yam) , and Dave Taylor. Moto two saw Denton an d Taylor in a classic battle. Gary, who also took the "King of the Hill," held off David and sprayed him with dirt at the finish. That little ma neuver proved to be costly for Denton. Taylor was unhappy and charged up a final mota holeshot to run away with the' win and the overall. • MXers kick up the dust at 395 C.P. By Phil Carpenter 12 Novice first moto and held it to the finish. He pulled the trick again in the second moto, bu t on the white flag lap Lady Luck deserted both Tope and Brown, and opened the door for Gary Jackson. Jackson liked the idea of Tope and Brown eating his dust and shot off the lin e in the third moto but hard driving Tope took over on the fourth lap for the overall win. Mike Stafford (Yam) and Tom Hamil to n (Hon) had earned a first and a second apiece when the green flag fell on the third moto of the 125 Beginners. But Scott Smith, after two motos of fourth places, got the hang of the whole thing, In m o to three he followed Hamilton around like a shadow, bu t on the last lap he , cranked the throttle on his new Honda for a first place win and third overall trophy. Rex Murdock's Suzuki creamed the co mpetition in 250 Beginner action and Harold Ulrich blew off the 100 Beginners wi th three wins. "Big J oh n " Hemme earned the maxi-size trophy in Mini-Novice competition. Bro ther Rick too k on Honda mounted Randy Yetto for second bu t lost it when Randy broke the tie with a first in the last moto. Lee Williamson earned his first trophy today in Mini Beginner action. Taking second to Darel Dupont for two motos was enough "following the leader" fo r this racer. • 125 Novice, Billy Brown. and the wo rld famous 395 Cycle Park Yucca tree.
