All of the class winners had fa miliar names with o ne notable excep tion . The big 750-0pen class had been taken by a rider who has n ot done well in the past, Mike Kien er. Kiener , who has been an off and o n hill climber for well over a y ear, f in all y fo und the ri ght combination. He ro ared up th e drag hill seeming to acceler ate every inch of the way. He beat out some of t he to p nam es in his class ; Neal Mackel, Ed Sh aver and Bill Correll, In the fin al runs, Kien er sh owe d that his class win had not been all luck. Allison wouldn't give Sext o n a second to slack o ff. The second mo to , Allison wa s the vict or and did a very good jo b of it. J im Wright , a roo kie Pro / Exper t, and Steve Fortune showed up to practice behind the pack. Wright is also preparing for t he lI ouston Natio na l. Alliso n proved his poin t in moto number th ree an d eas ily to ok t he win . With t his win and also the Special Expert win, the sweepstakes was the final ch alle nge. Allison came on stro ng to p ass th em all. A full cla ss o f Open Am ateurs signe d up and Larry Lambert lit er ally blew them off th e track. Larry Hedstrom was the closest to L ambert, an d Mike Baeder was th e third man across the finish line . Pau l McPh erson definitely has his new 25 0 Yamaha broken in. Am at eurs we re combined with the Experts but we re scored sep arately. Expert Greg Zehner won the first moto, but McPherson w a sn 't f ar b ehind. McPherson was re ady to roll in moto two and blasted off the line to lead the pack holding Zehner to second, but with some difficulty . The fin al moto went to Zehner, foll owed closely by McPh erson.
