He spun ou t spectacularl y right in fron t o f the whole crowd at th e home tum taking o u t course makers, hay bale s , s treamers , o ffi cial s, etc., and sin ce discretion is still the better part o f va lo r, hu ng it up to sip sud s. Seems the fuel hit the engine a n d st alled the KTM long enough for Steve Stricklin 's Kawasaki to ge t b y . The rem ain in g two laps was quite a race with Steve taking the chec kered by about six feet . This brough t an immediate protest from the Adams pit cre w that the race "wasn 't long enough," (all races went 9 laps) . Ah! Gary Ogden and Bob Elliott were o ne-two in the Open class, J eff Jen nings and Elliott in the 250 Pro and J ennings aga in in th e 125 Pro . Open Pro s Gary Ogden (Su z) , Mike Gilman (CZ ), J o n Derh am m e r (l\lai) and Bob Elliott (Su z) all go t down to serious business. Elli ott shot into second sp ot while Jeff Fo lan d (KT l\I) darted through t he pack, moving al l th e way up to third o nly t o cr as h with two la ps to go in t he m ota . Elliott was looking go od in th e second m ota until the last th ree lap s when Ogden a nd Derhammer bo th put the pass on h im. The 250 Pro division lo o ked like a m at ch between T eam D&G an d T eam Su zu ki. Fift y-four m oto s were scheduled to o pen th e ' 76 Cl\IC n igh t ra cing season at Irwindale. r The man o f the night was Joe Johnston (Suz) and he proved it by _ winning all three motos o f the 500 Pro class to takehorne the go ld . Joe's o n ly competition in th e first race was Mai co mounted T ime Lunde. The two raced down the st arting straight -side by side a nd things were bu ck le to bu ckle for the .first couple of laps until Joe got down to business a nd won with a clean lead. Joe had to tum up the heat in the second race after Curtis Lessel (Suz) got th e holeshot and a n early lead . Joe an d Curt is diced it ou t fo r the first two lap s b ut J oe finally got by o n the third lap . Curt is didn't lose much ground though , a nd finished a tight second. Val Tarnie tt i (Mai ) and Johnston diced it out for the entire last mota but Joe final ly too k the win an d the overall for the ni ght. Gary Denton (Ho n) was the hot shoe in 125 Pro racing.
