oee our ad in "Want Ads"
Today was the site of a rather
unusual Hare an d Ho und put on
by the San Bernar din o M.e. If
riding in ro cks is 'y our specialty.
you would have loved it. Eighty miles of
" Mo dem H & H" consisting of t wo
loops, running one inside the other and
merging at the pits for a common trail.
Novices took off at the sa me time as the
Amateur/Experts but headed for their
own smokebomb which led onto their
own course. The Novi ce bomb run had a
lot o f fast lines, but most ran in the
wrong; direction. The Expert start ran
the
foothills
with
closer
to
complimentary ro cks thrown in for fu n.
The start was small scale confusio n.
Seems that a club (Desert Barons) had
their banner raised at the same time as
the sponsoring club, confusing nearly all
the entrants. Before San Bernardino
could do anything about the mishap .
the Barons dropped their banner,
sending o ff ab o u t 50 dete rmined
Am ateur s /Experts .
Seeing
their
o pponen ts already well on their way ,
the entire line then fired up and ro ared
off, he ading fo r their own smokebombs.
At press time the entire issue and what
was to be done abo ut it was still up in
the air.
Larry Roeseler, sporting the number ,
Ix plate on his Husky, came flying
through the p its an d out onto the
Novice co urse with an exceptionally
lon g lead (ab o u t two and a hal f
minutes ) over Cordis Brooks (360 Bul ).
Cordis, determined to catch the speck
of dust off in the distance, pushed his
bike beyo nd its lim it and it seized a fe w
hundred yar ds beyond the pits. Cordis
was out and Brent WallinKsford charged
off in search of Roeseler, followed by
Dave Aldana. Mike Edmundson was
next in, taking care of the Open
Experts.
First Novice was a pie -plater (thus
class ified as an Expert) on a 125
Monoshock at an outrageous 16th
overall. Some confusion was caused by
the dust wh ich was so thick at times
that riders couldn't tell the courses
apart and started off the second loop on
the same course th ey 'd just completed,
, thus listing the m as DN Fs. Eventually
they re cognized the color of the ri bbon
and cut across to the proper loop.
The finish sign was hung above the
chute as Larry Roeseler slid in fo r the
overall win , first 250 Expert. After what
seemed to be a lengt hy tim e per iod
Bren t Wallingsford cam e motoring in for
second overall, second 250 Expert. Not
far b eh ind was third overall , first Open
Expert Mike Edmundson. George
Harve y was third 250 Expert. Dave
Aldana and A.C . Bakken took home
seco nd and third place brass.
A big diappointment for Trudy Beck
was in hand. After leadin g th e Women 's
Division fo r the entire 80 miles, a faulty
manifold cau sed her engine to run sour.
Lynette Zuber took the opportunity to
pass Trudy and her ailing KTM only two
y ard s before the finish line . However,
Lynette was riding a 250, thus winning
the 250 Expert. but Trudy won the 175
Women's Division and se cond overall.
.
According to many finishers , the , 1
co urse was excellen t . A wide variety of
can y o ns, sand was hes, rocks, downhills,
etc. were thrown in . Aside fro m th e
crazy start , a very fine race .

COY OTE WELLS,.CAL,JAN. 11
