He grabbed the holesho t in both mote s, but a tank slapper in the first mota m ade hi m have to fight all the way up fro m las t to regain second. T.J . Warren (Mo n }, wh o has really started to co me back after badly break ing his leg during the su m me r, was leading both mo to s t ill his bike q uit in the same place , sam e lap eac h mota and ended the day with a sixth overall. Jones blows pros off for two overalls By Mona Owen PHOENIX, ARIZ. , DEC. 14 High winds and chilly temperatures didn't cool off Roger Jones' (C-A) and (KTM) hot streak Sunday as he blew into first overall in the Open and 250 Expe rt class es at Can yo n Racew ay . Nineteen 125 Amateurs got o ff the line. Scott Andrist (H a n) ace d it , Robbie Hunter (Ya m) w as second and Corky Pond (Ha n) was pushing hard for third. As Hunter and Andrist ap proached Suicide Jump Andrist had a slight edge, but Hunter launched his Mono skyward, sailed into the lead, an d h eld it to the ch ec ke red. The seco nd mota of the 125 Amateurs was a real surprise. Larry Ow en (Ha n) grab bed the hole shot an d Hun ter , no t p acified with second , too k the insi de line as th ey approache d the lo ng back straightaway. The Mo n o had the power edge as t hey approached the uphill in fro nt of the tower, b u t Owen pulled him up th e lon g hill and re gained the lead. The race for third and fourth was tigh t between Andrist an d Pond as t he y passed the score tower hea d ing for the back sweepe r. Pond was clo sing the gap when Andrist went h igh outside letting Pond slip in side. Owen was still in the lead with Hunter closing fast . Owe n lan ded at the bottom of Suicide Hill, takin g the high outside berm on a sharp left-han d tum, and Hunter cut under him to re gain fi st mornen tar ily. r As they pulled up the hill , Hunter started a ta nk slapper and Owe n blew by for first aga in, only to bobble an d relinquish the lead to Pond and Andrist. Th at 's th e way first an d second fin ished, with Owen in third and Gar y Dir cks (Ya m ) in fourth. Robbie Hun ter was disqualified and Pond took first overall. Minis were ou t in force, along with goo d representation in all other clas ses and a special feature race of bike dealers and distributors trying their hand at motocross. Fre d Pres son, another Hi-Desert hotshoe, took the Op en Novice co m petitio n af ter hau lin g the t hird mo to away fr om Ch ris to pher Mu lle t (Yam ). 250 Beginner, Kir k Williams, won wi th two firsts and a second on th e longer course . but the real ba ttle was between Sam Crawfordon e and Wayne Dohrman for second. Dohrman's Yammie held o ff Craw fordone until lap fo ur o f t he third moto when Sam's Ho nda p asse d hard-drivin g Dohrman and held it for the checke re d. Dennis Veter sailed th ro ugh th e 125 Novice competition with three wins. Local hero T im Tope shut the door o n Alan Hoo ver 's Hon da with tw o second s an d a fourth for secon d over all. The critical thira moto of 100 Begin ners bro ke the tie be tween Rich Maebe an d Jeff Harris, each wi th a second an d a fir st.
