As far as the first two finishing positions were concerned, the race was decided at the smokebomb. Expansion Chamber ConeS ts e Balentine ~t there first, with Larry Roeseler (360 Hus) right behind. Balentine worked up nearly a 2o-second lead by the time the course hit a steep downhill about seven miles ou t. The favored team (and previous winners), Mitch Mayes and A.C. Bakken (360 Hus) had to be push-started after the bike failed to start. Last off the line, Mayes worked his way up to third about 15 miles. Only 100 yards away from Roeseler, Mitch was in the thick of his dust and clipped a rock in a tum, falling and reinjuring his collarbone he broke in Baja. At the completion of the first 50-mile loop. Balentine had a minute an d a hal f lead over Roeseler. Brent Wallingsford (250 Yam) was third. Tom Kelly (125 Yam) had worked his little bike up to an amazing fifth. but problems on the rocky hill just before the pits at Gallileo Park lo st him a position to Cordis Brooks (250 Bul] , who came into the pits behind fourth -place Andy Kirker (250 Hus). Bob Romine, riding with Kelly, had the transmission come apart. turning th e small bike lead over to Jeff Kaplan and Max Eddy (175 Hus). The third loop produced no changes in the top four. other than Balentine stretching out the lead to about seven minutes. Rick Shirey and Doug Winchell were aboard the only four-stroke in the race, a Yamaha TI500. Winchell passed the Nevada team of Jack Johnson and Mark Mason (400 KTM) to occu py fifth , this after Johnson had passed them on the second loop in his drive from 13th to fifth . Sponsor Ted Lapadakis was of course , ecstatic. The KTM they had ridden ran trouble-free all the way, save a bit of rich running towards the end. Tibblin was in soon afterward for second and then he and Roeseler were smiling and posing for pictures with the win ners . Ti m Bowman had passed Tibblin on the last loop, b ut n e neve r mad e it to the finish after several sprocket bolts on the rear hub disappeared.
