Jeff Wright (wiping) is being brave about it all: " BoY. that stuff is (yecch !l really good'" front end after Winchell bent the triple clamps and fork legs in a crash near the end of the third loop. The first Amateur team finished sixth. that team being J .C. Ray and Kern Parke (370 Suz], their first major race. In the early going they were up to fourth. but eight seizures set them back sligh tl y . After this first taste of big-time desert racing, theyll be entering the Mint and the Baja together. Kaplan and Eddy continued on as first small bike; actually they were the only ones in class to finish. at ninth overall despite several cases o f lost brakes. They deserve a lot of credit for going down the steep. rock-strewn face of Galileo Hill without brakes. But they were topped by Dennis Greene. who rode the last part of the first loop on the back rim. After changing wheels on the 250 CZ. Greene's partner Phil Stumbo had a trouble-free loop, gave it back to Greene. who ca me u p with another flat tire. " The DRA set up a Semi Pro class for No vices this year, to give the green-plate ride rs a chance at some m o ney . Solo rider Daryn Wyatt (360 Hus) took the lead on t he first loop after Randy Martin got lost. Wyatt led the first two loo p s but bro ke on the third. giving the lead back to Martin and his partner Wes Finkle on a 400 Yamaha. They kept the lead on the last loop in sp ite of a broken spring on the shock. Robbie Voight and Mark Mizu (250 Yarn) were fourth at the halfway point, moving into second on the third loop. Mizu was suffering the effects of a bad cold that had lasted for a week. but he kept the team in second despite four soil samplings at various points around the course on the last loop. Chuck Fowler and Sid Perry. riding a 400 Yarnaha, completed the top three. Jeff Cannon and Rick Wallace (Yam) were the first small-bike team to finish . Thirteen-year-old Kenny Upp (125 Yarn) rode 150 long miles by himself to fmish first Solo rider. Since Ron Burpo didn't have to worry about cars the course featured an incredible amount of variety. Steep downhills, loose rock uphills, fireroads, pavement. choppy cross-grain stuff and a few single-file ca nyons. There 's a lot of difference between desert racing and off-road racing. The entries amounted to 25 teams in the Pro class and about 30 entries in the Semi Pro class. Which apparently is about par for big money races such as th is. • Results in Results Section.
