Expert Bru ce Sm ylie was 100 apparen tl y at home in the mud ; he abso lu t ely walked away fro m everyone excep t Kevin Anderson, who fini sh ed just beh in d him. As th e mo rn in g progressed so d id the ride rs' crazy antics, caused by th e blin ding rain and sloppy mud. Bikes and riders, go in g every which way were no t alway s together o r upright. The 250 Ex pe rts and Pros were co m bine d and Tad Maudlin left th e ga te like the dev il was after hi m , not bothered a bit by the mud . The rest of the large pack was pretty well gro uped un t il Wendell Diltz and Bob Connors threw chains and others began to cras h in the muck. Riders looked as if they 'd had truck lo ads of mud dumped right o n t hem and there we re abso lu tely n o identifyin g signs left. Lap ch ec ker s went nuts try in g to figure it o ut; th e o rde r of fi nish wa s co n teste d , but most riders we re u nderstan di ng . After the first attempt Lawt o n, Harl ess and Campbell foun d th emselves o n ro w two, and they so o n had the co m pany o f Lester lIuey and Gary Davis . Brad lIurst go t to turn one a slight bit ah ead o f t he cro wd and Davis was soon free in second as Huey and Oliver ex changed third and fo urth at leas t three times . lIuey aced Oliver out just before th e flag. Fifteen-y ear -old Sam Armfield from Har bor , Oregon, came to ride , and ride he did, in th e 12 5, 20 0 and '5 0 0 classes. lIi s heats p laced h im in Il Mains , o ne right after the oth er . Arm field 's 125 Il Main trip o n a Hon da was a wa lk-away. So meone bro ugh t o ut his 20 0 , also a lI on da , took awa y th e 125 and Armfield cracked aw ay to a seco nd in the 200 B. ( First tr ansferred , giving Armfield another first.) A q uick b ike change, a Bul th is time, and Armfield sailed to a first in the 250 B. An other ride r lo oking for a worko ut was Ilutch Co chran. lie chal ked up points in th e 125 and 250 classes with a 125 TO first , a 125 A Main firs t, a 250 TO first an d a 250 A Main second. There we re lots of 125 s and some fancy an t ics from riders vying for t op spots. Phil Harless stopped dead in turn one, lost it pullin g a wheelie down the front st retc h and j ust abo u t d id it again in t urn four. All t ha t in one lap ! Bob Nichol son found th e gro und in n um ber four and J oe Guider gra b bed too mu ch track with his hotshoe and did a sudden stan d-up sto p . T he 125 C was a bum mer: six of seven riders wer e second ro wed!
